Summary
The Supervisor of Transmission Planning Engineering supervises the engineering services performed in the department. May be responsible for developing and managing outside business which includes meeting with new and existing customers, preparing/presenting proposals, negotiating contract and ensuring projects are profitable.
Transmission Planning Engineering Supervisors lead and supervise a System Planning team responsible for long-range, strategic transmission planning activities as well as a Modeling & Analysis team responsible for transmission case model maintenance, EMT studies, NERC and FERC based compliance activities including interconnection and transmission service applications. Both roles ensure the development of technically sound, forward-looking, and cost-effective transmission plans that support system reliability, customer growth, regulatory expectations, and corporate strategy.
Supervisors provide day-to-day leadership, technical oversight, prioritization, and staff development while coordinating closely with Transmission and Distribution management, program management, interconnections, regulatory, compliance, and operations.
Minimum Requirements
A four-year Bachelors degree in engineering or related applied science discipline (see approved list) from an ABET accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) plus five (5) years of experience in engineering positions, preferably within utility transmission planning, power system analysis, or related disciplines. Broad knowledge of engineering disciplines related to electric utilities. Must possess excellent people management, communication (oral and written), and organizational skills. Demonstrate an understanding of contract development, negotiation strategies, and proven success in attaining customer satisfaction.
Approved Engineering degrees: Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Structural. A four-year bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not considered an automatic equivalent for a B.S. degree in Engineering. A review of the degree program curriculum must be completed by the Engineering Career Path Review Board to determine equivalency level.
Major Accountabilities
1) Supervises department engineering work to ensure it is technically sound and cost effective and all projects meet schedule and budget commitments.
2) Develops plans and proposals that meet the customer's needs, are profitable, and maintain an appropriate level of risk for the company.
3) Monitors expenditures of unit or area of responsibility ensuring prudent use of company money and resources.
4) Maintains a technically competent department to meet the needs of our customers. Hires, supervises, evaluates, rewards and develops a multi-discipline staff.
5) Provides consulting expertise as needed. Maintains communication with industry and EPRI. Investigates new technologies.
6) Prepares detailed list and cost estimates. Ensures plant documents are appropriately maintained.
7) Supervise and guide transmission planning activities to ensure studies are technically sound, defensible, and aligned with reliability and planning objectives.
8) Communicate study assumptions, risks, limitations, and results clearly to management and stakeholders.
9) Candidates assigned to System Planning role will lead long-range and strategic transmission planning activities.
10) Candidates assigned to Modeling & Analysis role will lead compliance (NERC and FERC) and analysis driven planning activities.
