What is an Eagala?
An Eagala job involves using the Equine-Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) model to provide equine-assisted psychotherapy or personal development sessions. Professionals in this role work as part of a team, typically consisting of a licensed mental health professional and an equine specialist, to facilitate experiential learning and therapeutic interactions with horses. The goal is to help clients address mental health challenges, behavioral issues, or personal growth through structured, ground-based horse activities.
What does an Eagala do?
A typical day as an Eagala-certified professional involves facilitating equine-assisted therapy or learning sessions alongside a mental health professional, interacting directly with both clients and horses. You may spend time preparing horses, planning sessions, maintaining safety protocols, and documenting client progress. Collaboration with mental health clinicians and equine specialists is common to ensure integrated care and tailored interventions. The role balances hands-on equine work with therapeutic observation, making each day dynamic and rewarding. Teamwork, flexibility, and comfort working outdoors are important aspects of the daily environment.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Eagala?
To thrive as an Eagala-certified equine therapy professional, you need a solid understanding of mental health principles, horsemanship, and group facilitation, supported by Eagala certification and relevant experience in equine-assisted psychotherapy or learning. Familiarity with Eagala’s unique model and protocols, as well as basic safety equipment for working with horses, is essential. Strong communication, empathy, and the ability to build trust with both clients and team members will set you apart in this role. These skills are important to offer safe, effective interventions that support client growth and well-being within the Eagala framework.
