How much do emt side jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for emt side in the United States is $20.40, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.07 and $22.60 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges EMTs face during their shifts?

EMTs often encounter unpredictable and high-stress situations, such as responding to diverse medical emergencies and working in adverse weather or challenging environments. Shift work can include nights, weekends, and holidays, requiring flexibility and strong time-management skills. Additionally, EMTs must balance rapid decision-making with compassionate patient care while coordinating closely with other emergency personnel and hospital staff. Support systems and thorough training help EMTs manage these challenges effectively and maintain high-quality care standards.

Is being an emergency medical technician side: a good side hustle?

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) can work part-time or on a side basis, often providing flexible schedules for those with other commitments. However, EMT roles typically require certification, training, and the ability to handle high-stress situations, which may limit their suitability as a casual side hustle. It is generally considered a demanding job that offers good pay for the time invested but may not be ideal for everyone seeking a flexible side gig.

What other jobs can emergency medical technicians do?

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) can often transition into roles such as paramedics, emergency room technicians, or medical assistants, which require similar healthcare skills and certifications. They may also work in disaster response, ambulance services, or training and education roles related to emergency medical care.

How can an emergency medical technician side make extra money?

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) can earn extra income by taking on additional shifts, working for private ambulance services, or providing first aid at events. They can also offer CPR and first aid training or pursue certifications in advanced emergency care to increase earning opportunities outside their regular schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the EMT Side position?

To thrive as an EMT, strong emergency medical care skills, a high school diploma (or equivalent), and current EMT certification are essential. You must be proficient in using ambulance equipment, medical monitoring devices, and patient transport systems. Excellent communication, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are vital soft skills. These skills ensure effective care and quick response in high-stress emergency situations.

What is an EMT Side?

An EMT side job is a secondary position that emergency medical technicians (EMTs) take on in addition to their primary role. It can include part-time, per diem, or freelance work in areas like event medical services, patient transport, or teaching CPR classes. Many EMTs take side jobs to gain extra income, expand their experience, or have a more flexible work schedule while still using their medical skills.

Job description

Our Commitment
For more than 60 years, Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics has been a supportive, helpful neighbor in the community we all love. Though we have expanded our services and specialties while upgrading our technology and facilities, you will find we have kept our personalized, family-focused approach to healthcare alive and well. Learn more about our patients and services in our most recent newsletter Keeping You Well.
Role Overview
As an EMT, you help advance our mission by delivering timely, safe pre-hospital care and supporting emergency department operations to make a difference for patients and families across our community. In this full-time, onsite night role, you will provide patient assessment and initiate treatment within State protocols and your scope of practice, coordinate medical direction by radio/telephone when standing orders are not used, and collaborate with EMS partners, nursing staff, physicians, law enforcement, and fire personnel. You will also operate and maintain the emergency vehicle, keep the ambulance clean and stocked, and complete required documentation (prehospital reports within 24 hours and charting in the EMR) to ensure an accurate legal record.
Required qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited EMT program
- Current State of Iowa EMT certification; maintain IDPH Bureau of EMS requirements
- Current BLS certification
- Current Iowa driver's license
- Strong communication, empathy, and customer service skills
National Registry EMT preferred. Apply to contribute to meaningful impact through purpose-driven emergency care.
Night Shift Snapshot
Your night begins with a readiness check-confirming the unit is clean, stocked, and prepared for the next call. As requests come in, you transition quickly from calm to focused action, communicating clearly by radio or phone and staying aligned with State guidance and physician direction. You may move between scene response and the emergency room, working side by side with clinicians and coordinating smoothly with outside agencies to support continuity of care. Between calls, you reset equipment, review any updates that affect patient safety, and finalize time-sensitive reports and EMR entries so the record is complete before shift end-helping ensure the next team starts ready to serve our community.
Your Total Rewards
Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance; Life Insurance; Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) options; Paid Time Off; IPERS retirement; 457b and 457b Roth plans; and a competitive hourly pay range of $17.16 to $25.74.
