THE OPPORTUNITY
The E-Commerce Developer will be responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of our e-commerce platforms and related systems to support Deseret Book's online retail operations. This role will be part of our migration from Salesforce Commerce Cloud (SFCC) to Shopify, and will then continue to support Shopify going forward. It also collaborates closely with business unit leaders to build creative, scalable solutions to complex e-commerce challenges.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
60% Platform Development
  • E-commerce development using primarily Shopify platforms

  • Design and implement custom cartridges, pipelines, and controllers and develop and extend custom Shopify themes and apps

  • Integration development connecting SFCC and Shopify with internal systems, payment gateways, and third-party services

  • Perform all steps of the development life cycle from design and planning through testing and deployment

  • Optimize site performance and ensure scalability for high-traffic periods across both platforms

25% Collaboration & Solutions Design
  • Work collaboratively with business unit leaders to develop creative solutions to challenging e-commerce requirements

  • Partner with cross-functional teams, including marketing, merchandising, and operations to deliver seamless digital experiences

  • Participate actively in agile/scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, standups, and retrospectives

15% Maintenance & Continuous Improvement
  • Monitor platform health and proactively address performance, security, and reliability issues

  • Stay current on emerging Shopify features and e-commerce best practices

  • Maintain documentation for custom development, integrations, and deployment processes

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Professional experience in e-commerce development, preferably with Salesforce Commerce Cloud (SFCC)/Demandware and/or Shopify

  • Strong knowledge of Demandware Script, ISML templates, and SFCC architecture

  • Familiarity with Shopify Liquid templating, Shopify APIs, and the Shopify app ecosystem

  • Experience with RESTful APIs and web services integration

  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and responsive web design

  • Understanding of e-commerce best practices including checkout flows, inventory management, and order processing

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively on large projects with team members

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Shopify Plus experience and familiarity with custom app development

  • Knowledge of payment processing, tax calculation, and shipping integrations

  • Experience with SFCC Business Manager configuration and administration

  • Experience leveraging SFCC and Shopify APIs and integrating with CRM, ERP, and marketing automation platforms

  • Experience with JavaScript frameworks such as Angular, React, or jQuery

  • Experience in an Agile/Scrum work environment

  • Experience with high-traffic e-commerce sites and performance optimization

  • Knowledge of SEO best practices for e-commerce platforms
