What is a dynamic positioning officer?

A Dynamic Positioning Officer (DPO) is a specialized maritime professional responsible for operating and monitoring a vessel's dynamic positioning (DP) system. This advanced system uses computer-controlled propellers and thrusters to maintain a ship’s position and heading automatically, even in challenging sea conditions. DPOs work on vessels such as offshore supply ships, drilling rigs, and construction vessels, ensuring precise positioning for safe operations. They must be highly trained and certified, following strict international guidelines and standards. Their role is critical for offshore operations where anchoring is not feasible or safe.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dynamic positioning officer?

To thrive as a Dynamic Positioning Officer, you need a solid background in marine navigation, DP operations, and maritime safety, usually supported by a valid DP Operator Certificate and relevant maritime licenses. Familiarity with dynamic positioning systems (such as Kongsberg or Rolls-Royce), ECDIS, and vessel management software is crucial. Strong situational awareness, decision-making, and teamwork skills help manage vessel stability and coordinate with crew under pressure. These competencies ensure safe and efficient vessel operations in challenging offshore environments, minimizing risks and maintaining compliance.

What are the typical challenges a dynamic positioning officer faces when working on offshore vessels?

Dynamic Positioning Officers often face challenges such as rapidly changing weather and sea conditions, which require constant vigilance and quick decision-making to maintain vessel stability and safety. Coordination with bridge teams, engineers, and offshore project crews is essential, as operations are highly collaborative and communication is critical. Additionally, handling complex DP systems and troubleshooting technical issues under time pressure can be demanding, making ongoing training and adaptability key to success in this role.

What is the difference between Dynamic Positioning Officer vs Marine Engineer?

AspectDynamic Positioning OfficerMarine Engineer
CredentialsDP Certification, STCW certificationsMarine Engineering License, STCW certifications
Work EnvironmentOnboard vessels with DP systems, offshore operationsEngine rooms, machinery spaces, onboard ships
Industry UsageOffshore oil & gas, renewable energy, subsea constructionShip operations, vessel maintenance, propulsion systems

The Dynamic Positioning Officer and Marine Engineer roles both require STCW certifications and work in offshore maritime environments. Both are essential in offshore industries but serve different technical functions.

Fusion Growth Partners is a business incubator and micro venture capital firm which invests in promising small service-related businesses and individuals like real estate agents, loan officers, or professionals within an organization that want to grow their business and personal brand. Fusion helps you stand out in your marketplace by focusing on product, position, and process. Our system, when implemented, helps you reach the balance of growth you are seeking. Fusion invests our own capital and assets into your business. By actually working IN your business and doing much of the work you do not have the time to do, we help you work ON your business.

Job Description

DYNAMIC EXECUTIVE / LEADERSHIP POSITION

I am the Founder and CEO of Fusion Growth Partners, and I amlooking for one or possibly two exceptional people to help melead the company through its next stage of growth who can help us build a$100–$150 million company.

Fusion Growth Partners is an Inc. 5000 company (3x) serving 1100+residential real estate agents nationwide with a growth model nobody else inthe industry has replicated. Revenue: $20-30M. If we execute right: $100-150Mwithin 2-3 years.

Our leadership team is excellent and entirely homegrown.Every Vice President, every Associate Vice President and every Director came upthrough the company. That loyalty and institutional knowledge is a massiveasset and has cemented our positive culture.

Our current constraint is the ability to solve problemsfaster than our scale is creating and right now we could scale a lot faster –with the ability to solve high level problems at a great rate.

Stated slightly differently, the only constraint on our growthis our management’s capacity to solving those problems our growth creates tokeep pace with the potential rate of scale.

I'm looking for one or two people with a skill set thatdoesn't currently exist inside Fusion, people who can take the load off me and liftour existing leadership at the same time. The goal is to give an already-strong team the operational, financial, and strategic depth to perform at a much bigger level and to solve problems ata much faster pace.

The right person is a strategic and detail-driven thinker, high EQ, comfortable holding boundaries and accountability with people, genuinely motivating rather than just directive, and hungry to make their mark andexceptional at solving problems.

Fusion provides professional and business support servicesfor top producing residential real estate agents through our businessinfrastructure and internal team.

We have developed systems and capabilities that allow us toprovide an extraordinary amount of individualized support at scale, in waysthat are extremely difficult for traditional companies to replicate.

I am proud of what we have built so far, but we are nowherenear finished.

Today, Fusion is approximately a $20–$30 millionorganization. Our objective is to build a $100–$150 million company over thenext FEW years – by dramatically increasing our rate of growth and improvingthe level of services at the same time.

ABOUT FUSION

We have spent years building a company around a relativelysimple observation: successful residential real estate agents are often verygood at selling real estate, but building and operating a sophisticatedbusiness operation around themselves is extraordinarily difficult. They needmarketing, bookkeeping, recruiting, technology, project management, databasemanagement, transaction support, systems, processes, accountability, coachingand dozens of other capabilities. Traditionally, an agent either has to buildall of this themselves, hire an expensive internal staff, or live without muchof it.

Fusion created another model to solve this.

We have built an infrastructure capable of providing anextraordinary amount of business support to successful real estateprofessionals across the country. Depending upon the relationship, we canprovide services individually, as part of larger service packages, or through atrue partnership model where Fusion helps the agent operate and grow thebusiness and participates economically in the results.

Today, more than 1,000 successful real estate professionalsare partnered with Fusion, and we have built a company generating approximately$20–$30 million in annual revenue. We have hundreds of employees and anincreasingly sophisticated operating infrastructure behind what we do.

I believe we have the opportunity to build a $100–$150million company over the next several years and potentially somethingsubstantially larger beyond that. We have developed products, operatingcapabilities and intellectual property that are difficult to replicate, and weare continuing to identify entirely new ways to bring those capabilities to theresidential real estate industry.

About MySelf

I am highly involved in our strategy, our products, ourpeople, our systems and the details of how this company operates.

At our current size, I am still involved in far too manydecisions, problems, people issues and operational details and it is notsustainable if we intend to build the company I believe Fusion can become.

I need one or two people very high level individuals aroundme who dramatically increase the capacity of the entire organization.

THE PERSON WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The person we hire must be able to think strategically whilemanaging a high degree of operational detail. They should see the broaderbusiness clearly while recognizing that small execution failures, if leftunresolved, can become significant problems. They understand that greatorganizations are built through disciplined, consistent execution acrossthousands of decisions and actions.

This individual will likely be highly ambitious, accomplished, and still motivated by what they have yet to build. They wantmeaningful responsibility, ownership of outcomes, and the opportunity to leavea lasting mark on the organization. Complexity should energize them rather thanintimidate them.

When they see a business with significant potential andopportunities to improve execution, their instinct is to take ownership, solveproblems, and drive results. They must also be able to set high standards whiledeveloping people, hold firm boundaries while maintaining trust, and combineaccountability with strong leadership.

Experience and Knowledge Required

This role requires significant knowledge across multipleareas of the business, with a background that may lean toward either a CRO orCOO profile. The right person should have real depth in several areas such assales, marketing, operations, finance, organizational design, compensation, recruiting, technology, client experience, and performance management dependingon their knowledge slant weather it is toward revenue growth or operations.

STRATEGIC AND CREATIVE THINKING MATTER

Fusion is not a conventional company, and many of thechallenges we are addressing do not come with an established blueprint. Iadmire the process in which Elon Musk as been able to grow andbuild so fast, by being able to get into thetrenches, walk the floor of the factory so to speak and finding those businessconstraints and frictions and fix those problems thereby, anticipating thedemands of scale, and continuously improving profitability and the clientexperience.

PRIORITES

I am looking for an executive who is motivated by theopportunity to build, lead, and create meaningful impact. Fusion’s next stagewill require significant effort, resilience, and commitment. There will be longdays, difficult decisions, unexpected challenges, and times when we need towork beyond normal expectations to solve important problems. This opportunityis best suited for someone who is energized by building, solving, and leadingthrough complexity.

THE EXISTING ORGANIZATION

Fusion is an established company with meaningful scale, infrastructure, intellectual property, proven processes, a strong client base, and a talented leadership team. Many of our leaders have grown within theorganization and have played an important role in building the company to whereit is today. As Fusion enters its next stage of growth, we need to addcapabilities and experience that complement the strengths already in place. This role is not about replacing strong leaders; it is about helping them becomeeven more effective by elevating strategic thinking, execution, accountability, management discipline, and leadership across the organization. The right personwill create leverage throughout Fusion and strengthen the performance of theentire leadership team.

A FINAL THOUGHT

I am looking for someone who can make a significantdifference FAST -who can help shape itsfuture by understanding and representing the existing core and culture.

If that sounds like you, I would like to talk.
