Description:

Are you looking to make a real difference in the lives of others? Join the Catholic Charities team! For the last 100 years, we have had the distinct honor to provide help and hope for those in need. At Catholic Charities, our mission is to empower individuals and strengthen families. We do this through our vital programs including a food pantry, counseling services, emergency family shelter, domestic violence and sexual assault programming and refugee resettlement. We care for the dignity of the person, regardless of background and strive to provide unappalled support for those in need.

The Catholic Charities’ Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault program provides services to anyone faced with these issues through a 24-hour crisis phone line, emergency shelter, court advocacy and much more. This program is based in Council Bluffs, Iowa and serves nine counties in southwest Iowa: Audubon, Cass, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie, and Shelby. Our on-site emergency shelter provides a safe, confidential living for up to eight families at a time.

Our Domestic Violence Shelter Advocates are a vital part of our vibrate team working to support those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome and provide a safe environment for survivors of domestic violence.
  • Conduct intake interviews to assess needs and develop safety plans.
  • Offer emotional support, resources, and referrals to survivors.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to maintain a secure and welcoming shelter.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports related to shelter operations.
  • Assist survivors in accessing community resources and support services.
  • Contribute to the development of empowerment and life skills programs.

Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience in domestic violence advocacy or related social services is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including active listening.
  • Compassion, patience, and a strong commitment to supporting survivors.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and trauma-informed care.
  • Knowledge of local resources and services for survivors is an advantage.
