Job description

Position Summary

St. Petersburg Catholic High School (SPCHS) is seeking a dynamic, knowledgeable, and faith-aligned Head Pitching Coach for the Barons Baseball program. This position is responsible for leading the development, physical conditioning, arm health, and in-game management of the pitching staff across the Varsity (and sub-varsity) program.

The ideal candidate will combine modern pitching methodologies and biomechanics with high school-appropriate arm care, while exemplifying the values of sportsmanship, academic accountability, and Christian character.

Key Responsibilities 1. Pitching Mechanics & Player Development
  • Design and execute daily individual development plans (IDPs) tailored to high school athletes, focusing on mechanical efficiency, strike-throwing, and command.

  • Utilize video analysis, high-speed camera footage, and accessible metrics (e.g., Pocket Radar, Rapsodo, or pitch-tracking tools) to optimize movement patterns and pitch design.

  • Implement tailored bullpen routines, touch-and-feel sessions, and flat-ground exercises appropriate for growing high school pitchers.

2. Arm Health & FHSAA Compliance
  • Mandatory Compliance: Strictly enforce and log all Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) mandatory pitch count limits, rest protocols, and reporting requirements.

  • Develop daily warm-up, pre-throw, post-throw, and arm care protocols in coordination with the school's Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).

  • Monitor physical fatigue, velocity changes, and recovery markers to proactively reduce injury risk.

3. In-Game Strategy & Game Management
  • Formulate game plans and pitching strategies tailored to high school opponents in alignment with the Head Coach.

  • Oversee pitch-calling, mound visits, strategic defensive alignments, and bullpen warm-ups during games.

  • Educate pitchers on situational awareness, pickoff moves, hold times, and controlling the running game.

4. Mentorship & Catholic Mission Alignment
  • Serve as a positive role model, integrating Christian leadership principles, discipline, and humility into daily coaching.

  • Foster a high-energy, positive environment that builds confidence, mental toughness, and accountability.

  • Support student-athletes in balancing academic excellence with athletic commitments.

Qualifications & Core Competencies

Coaching Experienceย 2+ years of pitching coach or instruction experience at the High School, Collegiate, or elite Travel Baseball level.

State Complianceย Ability to clear NFHS certification requirements (Concussion in Sports, Heat Illness Prevention, Sudden Cardiac Arrest).

Diocesan RequirementsMust clear Diocese of St. Petersburg Level 2 background screening (fingerprinting) and complete Safe Environment Training.

Certificationsย Current CPR / First Aid / AED certification.
