Job description

We are seeking an experienced Transport & Facilities Engineer to support the reliability, maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting of network transport equipment and telecommunications facilities throughout the Austin market.

This hands-on position will work with transport equipment, MUX systems, dark fiber, DWDM, network hubs, data centers, collocation sites, and customer locations. The role will also support facility infrastructure, power systems, generators, alarms, contractors, and building-related issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, provision, maintain, and troubleshoot telecommunications transport and MUX equipment.
  • Troubleshoot dark fiber, DWDM transport systems, network elements, and transport facilities.
  • Perform fiber connections, physical wiring, testing, and acceptance of multi-level transport facilities.
  • Monitor and isolate network equipment troubles, alarms, and customer-impacting outages.
  • Analyze and resolve customer troubles and network outages in coordination with the NOC and engineering teams.
  • Install and connect peripheral, customer-premises, and data center equipment.
  • Perform site walks and inspect office batteries, DC power plants, and emergency generators.
  • Perform general maintenance on network transport hub equipment and maintain clean, safe equipment areas.
  • Coordinate with customers regarding new installations, disconnects, troubleshooting, and service requirements.
  • Work with vendors, including carriers and fiber providers, to coordinate installations, repairs, and troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate with Sales Engineering, Network Engineering, Service Delivery, NOC, Field Services, and Central Office teams.
  • Coordinate installation of cabinets, power, hardware, and telecommunications equipment at data center locations.
  • Serve as a primary contact for building issues, emergencies, repairs, and facility-related concerns.
  • Monitor contractor performance and ensure work is completed according to specifications.
  • Assist with building security and respond to facility alarms and emergencies in coordination with the NOC.
  • Perform basic electrical work and determine when specialized electrical contractors are required.
  • Maintain accurate equipment inventory, logs, records, and databases.
  • Transport equipment and materials to assigned network sites as required.
  • Perform additional network and facility maintenance duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of telecommunications facilities, network transport, switching, or fiber installation experience.
  • Hands-on experience installing, provisioning, maintaining, and troubleshooting transport equipment and MUX systems.
  • Experience with dark fiber and DWDM transport.
  • Strong fiber installation, connection, testing, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience troubleshooting network outages, alarms, and customer-impacting issues.
  • Understanding of telecommunications facility environments, including network hubs, central offices, data centers, and collocation sites.
  • Experience working with vendors, contractors, customers, and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Basic understanding of DC power, batteries, power plants, and generators.
  • At least 1 year of computer experience, including data entry and database management.
  • Strong communication, troubleshooting, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • High School diploma or GED required; college degree in Telecommunications or related field preferred.
