What is a DUI attorney?

DUI attorneys are lawyers who specialize in defending individuals charged with driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs. They are knowledgeable about state DUI laws, court procedures, and possible defenses that can be used in DUI cases. DUI attorneys can help clients navigate the legal process, negotiate plea deals, and represent them in court to achieve the best possible outcome. Their expertise is crucial in minimizing penalties, such as fines, license suspension, or jail time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DUI lawyer?

To thrive as a DUI Lawyer, you need a Juris Doctor degree, a state license to practice law, and deep knowledge of criminal and traffic law. Familiarity with legal research tools like Westlaw or LexisNexis, courtroom technology, and case management systems is crucial. Exceptional analytical thinking, negotiation skills, and the ability to communicate persuasively with clients, judges, and juries set top performers apart. These skills enable DUI lawyers to build strong defenses, navigate complex legal processes, and achieve the best outcomes for their clients.

What are some common challenges faced by DUI attorneys and how can they overcome them?

DUI attorneys often face challenges such as managing a high caseload, staying updated on frequently changing state laws, and dealing with emotionally charged clients. They must also skillfully analyze complex evidence, such as breathalyzer and field sobriety test results, and collaborate closely with investigators or expert witnesses. To overcome these challenges, successful DUI attorneys prioritize ongoing legal education, maintain strong organizational habits, and develop clear communication strategies with clients and colleagues.

Rolling Meadows, IL

Job description

At Dohman Law Group, we do more than defend cases; we help people rebuild their lives.

For more than 40 years, our firm has been a trusted advocate for individuals facing DUI, traffic, and criminal charges throughout the Chicagoland area. We understand that one mistake, one accusation, or one difficult chapter should not define a person's future. That's why we are committed to providing strategic, aggressive, and compassionate representation that helps clients move forward with confidence.

As a growing and highly respected criminal defense firm, we combine decades of experience with a modern, client-focused approach. With offices in Rolling Meadows and Wheaton, we serve clients across the greater Chicago area and continue to expand our impact throughout the region.

About the Role

Dohman Law Group is seeking a Criminal Defense Attorney to join our team in either our Rolling Meadows or Wheaton office.

This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney who enjoys litigation, courtroom advocacy, and client representation. You'll manage a steady caseload of DUI, traffic, and criminal defense matters while working alongside a team that values preparation, collaboration, and exceptional client service.

This is a production-focused position. We want our attorneys focused on practicing law, achieving results, and serving clients—not generating business. If you're looking for a role where you can spend your time litigating cases, appearing in court, negotiating favorable outcomes, and developing your legal skills, this position offers exactly that.

Compensation & Benefits:

Salary range: $115,000, depending on experience. Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, 401(k) options, and a generous paid time off policy. An environment that promotes teamwork, mentorship, and career progression, including ongoing professional development.

How to Apply:

If you’re ready to make a real difference in people’s lives and take pride in standing up for what’s right, we want to hear from you.

Compensation:

$110,000 - $120,000 yearly

Responsibilities:
  • Handle misdemeanor and felony cases from start to finish.
  • Conduct client consultations and develop strategic defense plans.
  • Represent clients at hearings, motions, and trials.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, and legal memoranda.
  • Negotiate plea agreements and settlements.
  • Maintain strong communication with clients and ensure accurate documentation.
  • Meet billable hour and KPI targets as defined by the firm.

Qualifications:
  • Active Illinois Bar License (required).
  • 2+ years of experience in criminal law preferred.
  • Candidates from other legal fields with strong skills will also be considered.
  • Strong courtroom presence and advocacy skills.
  • Excellent communication, research, and organization abilities.
  • Ability to work on-site at either the Rolling Meadows or Wheaton office.
