What is a dually truck?

A dually truck job typically involves driving a heavy-duty truck with dual rear wheels to transport heavy loads, equipment, or trailers. These trucks are commonly used in towing, hauling construction materials, or supporting hotshot trucking operations. Drivers may work for companies or operate as independent contractors. Licensing requirements vary, but a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may be required for certain loads.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the dually truck position?

To thrive as a Dually Truck Driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (often a CDL), excellent driving skills, and a solid understanding of load securement and DOT regulations. Experience with GPS systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and routine truck maintenance procedures is usually expected. Strong communication, attention to detail, and dependability are key soft skills for success. These competencies ensure safe, efficient transport of heavy loads and compliance with industry requirements.

What types of loads or assignments can I expect as a dually truck driver?

Dually Truck Drivers often haul oversized loads, heavy equipment, trailers, or materials that require a more robust vehicle than a standard pickup, but less than a full semi-truck. Assignments can include long-distance hauls, regional deliveries, or specialty contracts such as transporting vehicles, construction equipment, or agricultural products. The work can involve both solo driving and collaborating with dispatchers and clients to ensure timely, safe delivery. Flexibility and adaptability are helpful, as schedules and load types may vary week to week. Many drivers appreciate the variety and autonomy this role offers, as well as opportunities to build specialized hauling experience.
