Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer - Power Electronics

Job Overview

The Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer will be responsible for executing projects and initiatives on AC-DC Rectifier and DC-DC converter products. These projects will include New Product Introduction, Direct Material Productivity, resolving customer issues, and sustaining engineering of existing products. The Embedded Firmware Engineer will work with systems engineering and other technology functions to design, evaluate, code, integrate, and validate firmware for smart electrical protection systems.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer, you will:

  • Design and develop embedded firmware on a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) in C language for real-time control of single and three phase power factor correction (PFC), phase shifted full bridge, DC/DC and LLC resonant power converter topologies.
  • Model and implement closed loop digital control (PI, PID, PR, etc.) for same. Assembly language as required for critical speed fault detection and protection.
  • Design and develop inter-processor communication protocols and poll/response serial protocols.
  • Perform lab-setting debug on functional high power / high voltage circuits.
  • Adhere to coding standards and software engineering best practices including code maintenance in common code revision control system, such as CVS, Azure or Git.
  • Analyze results and present findings at technical design reviews to ensure design robustness, efficiency, future maintainability and supportability.
  • Work with the power electronics hardware team on optimizing/ debugging the product designs.
  • Support the global development team by ensuring that firmware maintains compatibility with other systems/products.
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate competency in an Integrated Development Environment (Visual Studio, Eclipse).

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum experience of 3 years as an Embedded Firmware Engineer

Desired Characteristics

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in building real-time embedded systems using object-oriented programming in C and C# language
  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering or in Computer Science
  • Have experience with Freescale-NXP, Microchip or Texas Instruments Microcontrollers / DSP
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (I2C, SPI, ModBus, CANbus)
  • Familiarity with Secure Development Lifecycle and Agile Development
  • Understanding of Data Acquisition and Digital Signal Processing theory
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Ability to drive projects to completion for production
