Job description

JOB SUMMARY: CFH is seeking a Porter for Residential Services. CFH operates under contract with the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and, as a contract agency, has reporting responsibilities to DHS and is subject to inspections and audits by DHS, the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance and the Coalition for the Homeless of New York City. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain cleanliness of the Shelter building and environment: including office areas, kitchen, restrooms, conference rooms, public gathering areas, public bathrooms, locker rooms, entry ways, elevators and stairs, garages, storage areas and the sidewalks. 

  • Maintain a detailed understanding of the overall property and resident-based facility. 

  • Inspect the building and property daily; perform routine preventative maintenance and immediately address safety issues.  

  • Responsible for cleaning/upkeeping resident areas (includes lifting and carrying furniture, kitchen appliances, etc.). 

  • Responsible for on-site projects (painting, installing and repairing) as assigned. 

  • Responsible for maintenance and extermination when needed. 

  • Receive deliveries and move deliveries to appropriate locations within the building.  

  • Coordinate with facility manager to log packages and advise the appropriate recipient. 

  • Keep and maintain accurate records as required by regulation or company operating protocols. 

  • Responsible for garbage removal. 

  • Quickly respond to spills, bathroom malfunctions, potential hazards, etc. 

  • Report and remove graffiti.  

  • Position garbage and recycling dumpsters for pick up on appropriate days. 

  • Collaborate with contracted specialists to perform seasonal or specialty tasks. 

  • Maintain inventory of custodial supplies and consumables throughout building according to department standards.  

  • Remove snow and ice and keep sidewalks clean and safe during inclement weather. General care of grounds (such as ensuring the walkways are safe in all weather conditions). 

  • Perform other related duties and tasks as assigned by the facility manager.  

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Required Education and Experience 

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred. 

  • Minimum of three (3) years demonstrated experience working in building maintenance. 

  • Must be able to work weekends/holidays 

  • Ability to stand and lift up to 70 pounds on occasion and bend, kneel, stoop and wipe regularly.  

  • Able to communicate effectively and work in a team environment.  

  • Assist with garbage removal (Adhering to all NYC (DSNY) sanitation guidelines (tying up boxes, sorting garbage, recycling, wrapping mattresses/ furniture for disposals, and maintaining the onsite garbage room). 

  • Assist with receiving deliveries. 

  • Assist with extermination as needed. 

  • Other related duties as assigned. 


Pay Range: $19.00 - $21.00
