How much do drone embedded software engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for drone embedded software engineer in the United States is $153,383.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $131,500.00 and $173,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a drone embedded software engineer do?

A Drone Embedded Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains the software that runs on the embedded systems within drones. They are responsible for programming low-level firmware, integrating sensors and hardware, optimizing real-time performance, and ensuring reliable operation of flight control systems. These engineers work closely with hardware teams to ensure seamless communication between the drone’s electronic components and the software. Their work enables drones to perform tasks such as navigation, stabilization, obstacle avoidance, and data collection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drone embedded software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drone Embedded Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills in C/C++, a background in embedded systems, and a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with RTOS, microcontrollers, firmware development, and tools like MATLAB or Simulink, as well as experience with communication protocols and hardware interfaces, are typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are key soft skills that help in addressing complex integration challenges. These skills are crucial for developing reliable, efficient software that ensures drone performance, safety, and innovation in a highly technical and collaborative environment.

What are some common challenges drone embedded software engineers face when working on flight control systems?

Drone Embedded Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring real-time performance, maintaining system reliability in unpredictable environments, and optimizing code for limited hardware resources. Debugging issues can be complex due to the integration of sensors, actuators, and wireless communication modules that must all interact seamlessly. Additionally, thorough testing is crucial, as software flaws can lead to safety-critical failures during flight, so engineers frequently collaborate with hardware teams and conduct both simulation and real-world testing.

Job description

Job Title: Embedded Software Engineer

Real-time embedded software

Position Overview

Synovix is seeking two experienced Embedded Software Engineers to support an on-site missile and weapon -systems program for a defense customer. The engineers will design, implement, integrate, and verify real-time embedded software across the development lifecycle.

What You Will Do
  • Design, develop, integrate, and test real-time embedded software for safety- and mission-critical weapon system applications.
  • Translate system and software requirements into maintainable software architecture, detailed designs, code, and verification evidence.
  • Develop primarily in C and C++ using the Green Hills development environment or a comparable embedded toolchain.
  • Integrate software with processors, sensors, actuators, interfaces, and laboratory test assets.
  • Diagnose timing, memory, concurrency, interface, and hardware/software integration issues on target hardware.
  • Support peer reviews, configuration management, defect resolution, and test readiness; guide architecture decisions, mentor engineers, and coordinate with systems, GNC, algorithms, modeling, test, and hardware teams.
Required Qualifications
  • At least 8 years of relevant embedded software engineering experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated C and/or C++ development experience in a real-time or resource-constrained embedded environment.
  • Experience with the complete software lifecycle: requirements, design, implementation, integration, verification, and problem resolution.
  • Experience debugging software on target hardware using standard embedded development and laboratory tools.
  • U.S. citizenship and eligibility to obtain a U.S. government security clearance if required by the program; an active clearance is not required at hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Missile, weapon system, avionics, flight control, seeker, or other aerospace/defense embedded software experience.
  • Green Hills MULTI, INTEGRITY RTOS, VxWorks, embedded Linux, or comparable RTOS/toolchain experience.
  • Experience with device drivers, board support packages, low-level interfaces, middleware, or hardware abstraction layers.
  • Familiarity with deterministic scheduling, interprocess communication, data buses, networking protocols, and performance optimization.
  • Experience with model-based development, software-in-the-loop, processor-in-the-loop, or hardware-in-the-loop test environments.
  • Knowledge of disciplined software standards and practices used in defense or safety-critical development.
