Drone Contractor information

What is a drone contractor?

Drone contractors are professionals or companies hired to operate drones for various commercial purposes, such as aerial photography, surveying, mapping, inspections, agriculture, and more. They provide specialized services using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and are typically certified and comply with aviation regulations. Drone contractors often work on a project basis, offering expertise in data collection, analysis, and safe drone operation for clients across industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drone contractor?

To thrive as a Drone Contractor, you need expertise in drone piloting, aerial photography or data collection, and a thorough understanding of aviation regulations, often supported by an FAA Part 107 certification. Familiarity with drone flight software, mapping tools, and image processing systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication with clients set top contractors apart. These skills ensure safe operations, high-quality deliverables, and successful client relationships in a rapidly evolving field.

What are some common challenges faced by drone contractors when working on client projects?

Drone contractors often encounter challenges such as navigating complex airspace regulations, managing weather-related delays, and ensuring data security for sensitive client information. Additionally, coordinating with clients to clearly define project requirements and deliverables can be demanding, especially when expectations differ. Staying updated on evolving technology and maintaining equipment are also key aspects to manage for successful project completion.

Job description

Freelance Job Posting: Reality Capture

Specialist (LiDAR & Drone)

Company: M Hudson Design, Inc.

Location: South Florida (On-site required for capture)

Position Type: Freelance / Independent Contractor (Project-Based)

About M Hudson Design

M Hudson Design (MHD) is a premier, ultra-luxury landscape architecture firm based in West

Palm Beach, Florida. We are pioneering the world’s first fully integrated experiential

design process. We don't just show our clients 2D plans; we build immersive, cinematic 3D

digital twins of their future estates, allowing them to experience their homes before ground

is ever broken.

We are seeking a highly skilled Reality Capture Specialist to serve as the critical first step

in our design pipeline. You will be responsible for capturing the existing real-world

conditions of ultra-luxury estates and translating them into pristine digital data.

The Role

As our Reality Capture Specialist, you will conduct field visits to high-end residential

properties across South Florida. Your primary objective is to capture the site using

advanced LiDAR scanning and drone photogrammetry, and then process that data into

clean, highly accurate 3D point clouds and meshes.

Your deliverables are the foundation upon which our entire 3D architectural and landscape

design process is built. Precision, professionalism, and speed are paramount.

Key Responsibilities

• Field Capture: Independently travel to ultra-luxury project sites in South Florida to

conduct comprehensive site surveys.

• LiDAR Scanning: Operate terrestrial LiDAR equipment (e.g., Leica BLK360 or similar) to

capture millimeter-accurate scans of existing architecture, hardscapes, and critical

topography.

• Drone Photogrammetry: Pilot enterprise-level drones (e.g., DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise,

Matrice series) to capture high-resolution aerial imagery and video for photogrammetry

and Gaussian Splatting workflows.

• Data Processing: Stitch, register, and clean raw LiDAR and drone data using industrystandard

software (e.g., RealityCapture, Leica Cyclone, or RealityScan).

• Deliverable Handoff: Export and deliver clean point clouds (.las, .e57) and 3D meshes

(.obj, .fbx) to our remote 3D modeling team via our cloud server (BIM 360 / Google Drive)

within strict 48-72 hour turnaround windows.

• Professional Representation: Act as a representative of MHD on-site, maintaining the

highest level of professionalism and discretion around ultra-high-net-worth clients and

their properties.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Hardware Ownership: Must own or have reliable access to professional-grade

terrestrial LiDAR equipment and a commercial mapping drone.

• Licensing: Active FAA Part 107 Commercial Drone Pilot License is strictly required.

• Software Proficiency: Expert-level experience in photogrammetry and point cloud

processing software (RealityCapture preferred).

• Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of coordinate systems, survey control,

point cloud registration, and mesh decimation.

• Portfolio: Must provide a portfolio or examples demonstrating previous reality capture

work, specifically involving complex outdoor environments, vegetation, and residential

architecture.

• Location: Must be locally based in South Florida with reliable transportation to travel to

sites ranging from Miami to Jupiter.

Bonus Qualifications (Nice to Have)

• Experience processing data specifically for Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) workflows (e.g.,

Luma AI, Polycam).

• Familiarity with capturing 360-degree ground photography (e.g., Insta360).

• Previous experience working on luxury residential construction or architectural projects.
