Job description

Please note that this is a 12 month contract. 

Role: 

Automotive Assistants are responsible for the safe unloading, loading, and placement of vehicles in a safe and timely manner that responds to the customers' needs. For more information about the position please click here: http://www.cn.ca/en/your-industry/automotive 

Critical Performance areas: 

Performing yard checks and inventory updates 

Operating, loading and unloading ramps 

Opening and closing railway car doors 

Removing and Installing vehicle blocks 

Installation and removal of bridge plates between railway cars. Bridge plates are the link or connection between the railway car junctions used to bridge the gap 

Working Conditions:  

Working shifts, weekends, and holidays 

Working on call 

Frequent lifting weights up to 50 pounds 

Able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions 

Physical work, being able to walk long distances, climb railcar ladders and crouching inside railcars 

Employment Requirements: 

High School degree or equivalence 

Must possess a valid class 5 driver license, and be able to drive a manual transmission 

Minimum two years' driving experience 

Clean driving record is a must, no infractions in the last five years. The candidate will have to provide their driving record 

Good teamwork and communication skills 

Good hand-eye coordination 

Technology and computer skills that apply to the job 

Ability to correctly analyze a situation and respond appropriately 

Training: 
Automotive Assistants are given a 2 day classroom training with a health & safety team member covering the theory of CN's rules, polices, procedures, and safety measures at the Automotive Facility. This is followed by a 2 week on the job practical training. New hire is then mentored and coached during the 3 month probation period.
