What is a driver helper?

Driver Helpers assist delivery drivers with loading, unloading, and delivering packages, especially during busy seasons. They typically ride along with the driver, help carry packages to customers' doors, and ensure deliveries are completed efficiently and safely. This role often requires physical stamina, good customer service skills, and the ability to work in various weather conditions. Driver Helpers do not drive the vehicle themselves but are essential in supporting timely deliveries.

What does a driver helper do?

As a driver helper, your duties are to help a delivery driver to load and unload their truck and accompany them on the route from the warehouse or shipping facility to customers. Your specific responsibilities also include helping to prepare and store equipment, such as hand trucks and dollies for moving large packages. Many driver helpers work for the large parcel delivery services, such as UPS, FedEx, and DHL, and they are often entry-level jobs where you get training before you can work as a delivery person yourself.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a driver helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Driver Helper, you need physical stamina, basic math skills, and the ability to safely handle and move packages, often requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with handheld scanners, GPS devices, and delivery management systems is commonly expected. Strong communication, reliability, and teamwork are essential soft skills for supporting the driver and ensuring efficient deliveries. These skills are crucial for maintaining timely, accurate deliveries and upholding customer satisfaction in a fast-paced logistics environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by driver helpers during peak delivery seasons?

During peak delivery seasons, such as holidays, Driver Helpers often encounter increased package volumes and tight delivery schedules. This can mean longer hours, more physically demanding work, and the need to adapt quickly to changing routes or weather conditions. Effective communication with the driver and strong organizational skills are crucial to ensure timely and accurate deliveries. Staying positive and maintaining a team-oriented attitude help in managing the fast-paced environment.

Delivery Drivers operate vehicles to deliver goods directly to customers, usually holding a valid driver's license and sometimes specific endorsements. Both roles are integral to the logistics and delivery industry, but Driver Helpers focus on support tasks, while Delivery Drivers handle the driving and customer interaction.

Is being a driver helper hard?

Being a driver helper involves assisting with loading and unloading packages, often requiring physical effort and good communication skills. The job can be physically demanding and may involve working in various weather conditions, but it generally does not require specialized training or certifications. Job description

Construction Helper / Punch-Out Technician

Morris Communities is looking for a dependable, hardworking, and self-motivated Construction Helper / Punch-Out Technician to assist with our residential construction projects.

This position is ideal for someone who is comfortable working with their hands, takes pride in keeping jobs clean and organized, and can handle a variety of small construction, punch-out, and field coordination tasks without needing constant supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and organize active construction sites daily
  • Sweep floors, garages, porches, driveways, and work areas
  • Pick up construction debris and dispose of trash
  • Move, load, unload, and organize heavy building materials
  • Perform interior and exterior paint touch-ups
  • Perform minor drywall repairs and touch-ups
  • Complete small framing repairs and miscellaneous carpentry
  • Perform basic trim and molding work
  • Install or repair small construction items as needed
  • Help prepare homes for inspections, walkthroughs, and closings
  • Identify punch-list items and help get them completed
  • Pick up and deliver construction materials between suppliers and job sites
  • Order construction materials as directed
  • Verify material quantities before ordering
  • Check deliveries for missing or damaged materials
  • Help keep track of materials needed on each job
  • Coordinate material pickups and deliveries
  • Communicate with suppliers regarding orders and availability
  • Communicate with subcontractors regarding job-site needs and scheduling
  • Help make sure subcontractors have the materials they need to complete their work
  • Assist with scheduling subcontractors and follow-up when needed
  • Answer job-related calls and communicate updates to management
  • Read basic plans, blueprints, and construction drawings
  • Measure areas and verify basic dimensions when needed
  • Help verify that work is completed before the next trade is scheduled
  • Take job-site photos and provide progress updates
  • Keep tools, materials, and job sites organized
  • Handle small warranty or punch-out items when assigned
  • Assist with landscaping, grass watering, mowing, and general exterior cleanup when needed
  • Perform miscellaneous construction-related tasks as assigned
  • Be willing to move between multiple job sites throughout the day

What We're Looking For

The right person for this position should:

  • Be self-motivated and able to work without constant supervision
  • Have a strong work ethic and dependable attendance
  • Be comfortable performing physical labor throughout the day
  • Be able to lift and move heavy construction materials
  • Know how to properly use basic hand and power tools
  • Have basic knowledge of painting, drywall, framing, and trim carpentry
  • Be comfortable ordering and picking up construction materials
  • Have basic math and measuring skills
  • Be able to read basic construction plans or be willing to learn
  • Pay close attention to details
  • Be organized and able to keep up with multiple jobs
  • Be comfortable communicating with subcontractors and suppliers
  • Be willing to clean — using a broom and cleaning a job site is a regular part of this position
  • Be able to recognize something that needs to be done and handle it without always being told
  • Have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Be comfortable driving to multiple job sites and suppliers

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who isn't afraid to work and understands that residential construction requires flexibility.

One day you may be doing paint and drywall touch-ups, the next you may be moving lumber, picking up materials, ordering supplies, installing trim, cleaning out a house, checking on subcontractors, or helping get a home ready for closing.

This is not a position for someone who needs to be told every hour what to do. We want someone who can walk onto a job, see what needs attention, communicate what is needed, and get it taken care of.

Construction or carpentry experience is preferred, but reliability, work ethic, organization, attitude, and willingness to learn are extremely important.

Position: Full-Time, W-2 Employee
Industry: Residential Construction
Company: Morris Communities
