What Does a Drilling Rig Floorhand Do?

As a drilling rig floorhand, sometimes called a roughneck, you work on an oil rig floor, handling difficult and physically strenuous operations. This is frequently an entry-level position from which you can progress into other less taxing and more remunerative work aboard an oil rig. As part of your responsibilities and duties as a floorhand, you may carry pipes, clean equipment, and assisting other experienced workers with projects as needed. Work shifts do not follow the normal weekly routine found in other jobs, and you may find yourself working for extended periods on and longer intervals off, for example, twelve days on and four days off.

You'll work closely with the derrickhand, driller, and other crew members to ensure the smooth and safe functioning of the rig. Communication and teamwork are essential, as the role requires coordination to manage heavy equipment and respond quickly to any operational hazards. This hands-on position is physically demanding and often involves working long shifts, but it's a great opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the oil and gas industry and progress to more advanced positions.

What are Drilling Rig Floorhands?
