What Does a Drilling Rig Floorhand Do?

As a drilling rig floorhand, sometimes called a roughneck, you work on an oil rig floor, handling difficult and physically strenuous operations. This is frequently an entry-level position from which you can progress into other less taxing and more remunerative work aboard an oil rig. As part of your responsibilities and duties as a floorhand, you may carry pipes, clean equipment, and assisting other experienced workers with projects as needed. Work shifts do not follow the normal weekly routine found in other jobs, and you may find yourself working for extended periods on and longer intervals off, for example, twelve days on and four days off.

Both roles require safety certifications and work in close proximity, but Derrickhands typically have additional responsibilities related to pipe handling and derrick operations.

What are some of the typical daily responsibilities of a Drilling Rig Floorhand, and how does this role interact with other crew members?

As a Drilling Rig Floorhand, your daily responsibilities include handling drill pipes, maintaining equipment, cleaning the rig, and assisting with the setup and dismantling of drilling operations. You'll work closely with the derrickhand, driller, and other crew members to ensure the smooth and safe functioning of the rig. Communication and teamwork are essential, as the role requires coordination to manage heavy equipment and respond quickly to any operational hazards. This hands-on position is physically demanding and often involves working long shifts, but it's a great opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the oil and gas industry and progress to more advanced positions.

What are Drilling Rig Floorhands?

Drilling Rig Floorhands, often called roughnecks, are entry-level workers on oil and gas drilling rigs responsible for a variety of physically demanding tasks. They handle drill pipes, maintain equipment, clean the rig, and assist other crew members in drilling operations. Floorhands are essential for keeping the rig organized and ensuring the smooth operation of drilling activities. The position requires teamwork, attention to safety, and a willingness to work long hours in challenging environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Drilling Rig Floorhand, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drilling Rig Floorhand, you need physical stamina, mechanical aptitude, and a high school diploma or GED, with some employers preferring prior oilfield experience. Familiarity with rig-specific tools, heavy machinery, and safety certifications like H2S and first aid are typically required. Strong teamwork, communication skills, and attention to safety protocols help a Floorhand excel in this demanding environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining operational efficiency and ensuring personal and crew safety on the rig.
