Drilling Helper information

What is a drilling helper?

Drilling Helpers are workers who assist drill operators and technicians in setting up, operating, and maintaining drilling equipment at construction, mining, or oil and gas sites. Their tasks often include preparing drilling materials, cleaning and maintaining equipment, monitoring drilling operations, and ensuring a safe work environment. Drilling Helpers also transport tools and supplies, help assemble and disassemble rigs, and support the team in following safety protocols. This entry-level position is physically demanding and requires attention to detail to help ensure successful drilling operations.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a drilling helper?

As a Drilling Helper, your daily tasks often include assisting the drill operator with setting up and maintaining drilling equipment, handling drilling materials, and ensuring the worksite remains clean and organized. You may also be responsible for measuring and marking drill locations, mixing drilling fluids, and transporting tools or samples. Teamwork is essential, as you'll work closely with drillers, geologists, and safety personnel to ensure efficient and safe operations. This role requires a strong work ethic and attention to safety protocols due to the physically demanding and sometimes hazardous environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drilling helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drilling Helper, you need physical stamina, basic mechanical knowledge, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with drilling equipment, safety gear, and possibly OSHA safety certifications is typically required. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and a willingness to follow instructions are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe and efficient drilling operations, minimizing accidents and maintaining productivity on site.

What is the difference between Drilling Helper vs Drilling Operator?

AspectDrilling HelperDrilling Operator
CredentialsHigh school diploma, safety certificationsHigh school diploma, technical training, certifications
Work EnvironmentAssist in drilling sites, manual laborOperate drilling equipment, oversee drilling process
Job ResponsibilitiesSupport drilling crew, handle tools, maintain safetyControl drilling operations, monitor equipment, troubleshoot

While both roles work on drilling sites, a Drilling Helper primarily assists with manual tasks and support functions, whereas a Drilling Operator manages and operates drilling machinery. The Helper role is often an entry-level position, with the Operator requiring more technical skills and experience.

How to become a drilling helper?

To become a drilling helper, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and should be comfortable working in physically demanding environments. On-the-job training is common, and basic knowledge of tools and safety procedures is beneficial; some employers may require OSHA safety certifications. Experience in construction or manual labor can improve job prospects.
