What is drayage?

A drayage job involves transporting freight over short distances, typically between ports, rail yards, and distribution centers. Drayage drivers handle containerized cargo, often moving shipments from ships or trains to their next destination. This type of trucking is essential in the supply chain, ensuring goods transition smoothly between different modes of transport. Drayage jobs require specialized equipment, such as chassis to haul shipping containers. Drivers usually operate within a specific region, making it a crucial yet localized part of freight logistics.

What does a drayage worker do?

Drayage professionals are responsible for the short-haul movement of cargo containers between ports, rail terminals, warehouses, and distribution centers. On a typical day, you may coordinate pickup and delivery schedules, inspect and secure loads, handle required documentation, and communicate with dispatchers and facility personnel to resolve any issues or delays. The role requires careful attention to timing and compliance with safety and regulatory standards. You’ll also spend a significant portion of your day driving and navigating port or urban environments, often working independently but with ongoing coordination with your team and customers.

What skills and qualifications are needed for drayage?

To thrive in drayage, a strong knowledge of freight logistics, transportation regulations, and efficient route planning is essential, often supported by a commercial driver's license (CDL) and experience with container handling. Familiarity with transportation management systems (TMS), GPS tracking devices, and port-specific software is commonly required. Excellent communication, time management, and problem-solving abilities help drayage professionals excel when coordinating with customers, dispatchers, and terminal staff. These skills are crucial to ensure timely and compliant cargo transfers, minimize delays, and maintain smooth operations in a fast-paced logistics environment.

How do I get into drayage?

To get into drayage, you typically need a commercial driver's license (CDL) and experience driving heavy trucks. Knowledge of logistics, transportation regulations, and the use of equipment like chassis and containers is also important. Entry-level positions may require a clean driving record and the ability to work flexible hours in a fast-paced environment.

About the Role

We're looking for an experienced Pricing Analyst to support our commercial organization by developing accurate, competitive, and operationally sound pricing for drayage opportunities. This role plays a critical part in our bid and RFP process, ensuring pricing reflects real market conditions, internal cost structures, and the operational realities of port.

This individual contributor role requires extensive hands-on experience in drayage logistics pricing and a deep understanding of the operational factors that impact rates, including terminal constraints, equipment availability, appointment-based workflows, and short-haul network dynamics.

What You'll Do

Pricing & Market Analysis

  • Develop pricing for drayage using market data, lane performance, and historical trends

  • Incorporate port operations, terminal constraints, chassis availability, dwell time, and appointment requirements into pricing assumptions

  • Utilize internal cost models and industry tools to price short-haul and port-centric lanes accurately

  • Evaluate margin impact and ensure pricing aligns with profitability and network strategy

  • Monitor market dynamics, congestion patterns, capacity shifts, and competitor pricing

Bid & RFP Support

  • Prepare and review pricing for bids, RFQs, and RFPs with a focus on drayage and containerized freight

  • Ensure pricing submissions meet customer requirements, service expectations, and deadlines

  • Partner with Sales, Operations, and other stakeholders to deliver accurate, executable proposals

  • Analyze win/loss results and provide recommendations to improve competitiveness and bid strategy

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Sales, Operations, Capacity, and Finance to validate pricing assumptions

  • Help determine which freight opportunities align best with our drayage network and operational capabilities

  • Support internal teams with pricing insights, scenario analysis, and recommendations

Documentation & Process Improvement

  • Maintain pricing documentation, templates, and bid records

  • Support continuous improvement of pricing tools, processes, and cost models as the business scales

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of direct experience pricing drayage or containerized freight transportation
  • Must have extensive hands-on experience in pricing, bid management, or analytics within transportation or logistics, with direct experience pricing drayage

  • Strong analytical skills and comfort working with data and pricing models

  • Proficiency in Excel (modeling, analysis, scenario evaluation)

  • Excellent organization, communication, and time-management skills

  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

  • Familiarity with port operations, terminals, chassis providers, and appointment-based workflows

  • Exposure to RFP/RFQ processes

  • Salesforce or CRM experience

  • Experience with freight market tools and rate benchmarking
