Responsibilities:

  • Determine the optimal tool path for fabricating the tool/form/mold by selecting appropriate machine tools (e.g., lathes, drill presses, milling machines, grinders, boring machines, etc.) and specify the sequence of tool operations.
  • Manually setup/adjust machine tools and/or loading instructions into computer numeric control (CNC) systems.
  • Analyze specifications, lay-out metal stock, and operate machine tools.
  • Fit and assemble parts to fabricate and repair metal working dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges and machinists' hand tools.
  • Analyze blueprints, computer-aided design (CAD/CAM/CAE) models, and engineering specifications to define the dimensions and features of the cutting/shaping tools, forms, molds, gauges, and jigs/fixtures.
  • Work from blueprints and sketches to create, modify, and/or improve tools, dies, jigs and molds for accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot any problems that are presented during production or on the bench.
  • Recommend revisions in design and/or substitutions in material based on machinability or fabrication problems encountered.
  • Suggest methods and die modifications for improvement (i.e., Continuous Improvement Plan).
  • Modify dies to conform to engineering changes.
  • Produce as needed, low volume production part runs requiring toolroom equipment and/or expertise.
  • Work with engineers to create and/or modify prints to reflect changes.
  • Work with Assembly and Machining to ensure good quality parts.
  • Work with engineers and leadership to develop and maintain efficient and reliable tool & die processes.
  • Perform preventive maintenance by assignment and assist with establishing preventive maintenance limits and guidelines.
