Job description

Carr’s Tree Service is seeking an experienced, safety-driven Crew Leader to lead daily tree care operations and support the development of high-performing crews. This role is ideal for someone who leads by example, communicates clearly, and takes pride in doing the job right — safely, efficiently, and professionally.

Primary Responsibilities of a Crew Leader:

Safety & Compliance

  • Lead daily safety meetings and ensure job briefings and required documentation are completed.
  • Enforce company safety policies and compliance with OSHA, ANSI Z133, and ANSI A300 standards.
  • Ensure proper use and care of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Respond to emergency situations, including first aid, CPR, and aerial rescue when required.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Supervise and lead a crew of 1–4 team members.
  • Provide daily direction, coaching, and hands-on training.
  • Communicate crew performance, strengths, and improvement areas with the General Foreman.
  • Lead by example with professionalism, work ethic, and positive attitude.

Tree Care Operations

  • Plan, oversee, and participate in tree trimming, pruning, and removal operations.
  • Oversee all daily crew operations including but not limited to: brush chipping, brush mowing, chainsaw work, equipment operations, and site cleanup.
  • Ensure quality, productivity, and efficiency goals are met.

Customer & Landowner Communication

  • Communicate professionally with landowners, customers, utility representatives, and the public.
  • Obtain landowner permissions and provide updates on work progress.
  • Represent Carr’s Tree Service with integrity and professionalism at all times.

Equipment Operation & Maintenance

  • Safely operate and maintain equipment including bucket trucks, stump grinders, skid loaders, claw trucks, and chippers.
  • Identify equipment issues, submit reports through Fleetio, and communicate with management to minimize downtime.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Complete and submit required paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Maintain records of work completed, maps, and job documentation.
  • Track and report crew performance and productivity metrics.
  • Document training and performance conversations through the company HRIS.

Emergency Response & Flexibility

  • Be available for extended hours, overtime, weekends, holidays, and storm response when needed.
  • Adapt to changing work conditions, weather, and job priorities.

Crew Leader Qualifications:

Required

  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience on tree trimming or clearing crews.
  • Proven leadership ability and strong communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of OSHA and ANSI safety standards.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Valid driver’s license, DOT medical card, and First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job and work in all weather conditions.

Desired

  • CDL Class A license with air brakes (must be willing to obtain within 6 months of hire).
  • MN Pesticide Spray License Class A-J ROW.
  • EHAP (line voltage recognition) training.
  • ISA Certification or ability to obtain.
  • Degree in Forestry or a related field.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift, carry, push, pull, and drag up to 80 lbs.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Work at heights up to 60 feet.
  • Work near or under energized power lines.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks in temperatures ranging from 90°F to -25°F.
  • Safely operate vehicles and equipment in accordance with DOT, OSHA, ANSI, and manufacturer regulations.
