What Does a Draftsman Do?

A draftsman, or drafter, is a professional who is skilled in generating computer-aided design and drafting (CAD) drawings. A draftsman may specialize in various areas such as architecture, mechanical system, or civil engineering or in working with certain materials, like electrical circuits, concrete, or steel. They may produce technical drawings for manufacturing as well. The role and responsibilities of a draftsman vary significantly from one job to the next.

What does a draftsman do?

A draftsman, also known as a drafter, is a professional who creates detailed technical drawings and plans used in construction, manufacturing, and engineering. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to turn ideas and specifications from architects or engineers into precise blueprints. These drawings are essential for communicating how structures or products should be built, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards.

Do I need a degree to be a draftsman?

A degree is not strictly required to become a draftsman, but many employers prefer candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent and relevant technical training. Vocational schools, community colleges, and certification programs in CAD software and drafting techniques can provide necessary skills for the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Draftsman, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Draftsman, you need proficiency in technical drawing, a solid understanding of engineering or architectural principles, and typically an associate degree or certification in drafting. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD or Revit is essential, along with knowledge of industry standards and building codes. Attention to detail, strong communication, and the ability to collaborate with engineers and architects are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate, clear, and efficient creation of technical drawings that are crucial for successful project planning and execution.

What is the highest salary of a draftsman?

The highest salary for a draftsman can reach around $70,000 to $80,000 annually, typically for experienced professionals with advanced skills in CAD software and specialized industries. Salaries vary based on location, experience, and industry demand.

What is the work of a draftsman?

A draftsman creates detailed technical drawings and plans used in construction, manufacturing, and engineering projects. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce accurate representations of structures, products, or systems, often working closely with engineers and architects to ensure specifications are met.

What are some common challenges faced by a Draftsman when working on multiple projects simultaneously?

Draftsmen often juggle several projects at once, which can present challenges such as managing tight deadlines, ensuring design consistency, and adapting to varying client requirements. Effective time management and strong organizational skills are crucial to prioritize tasks and keep all projects on track. Additionally, clear communication with engineers, architects, and project managers helps resolve conflicts and ensures that all drawings meet the required standards. Learning to balance attention to detail with efficiency is key for success in this role.

What is the difference between Draftsman vs Civil Engineer?

AspectDraftsmanCivil Engineer
CredentialsDiploma or certificate in drafting or CAD softwareBachelor's degree in civil engineering
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, architectural firms, construction sitesDesign, planning, and project management in construction projects
Industry UsageUsed mainly for creating technical drawings and plansInvolved in project design, analysis, and oversight

Draftsmen focus on creating detailed technical drawings based on specifications, often with CAD software, while civil engineers oversee entire construction projects, including design, analysis, and management. Both roles are essential in the construction industry but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a hardworking team of systems engineers and designers, you will contribute to and support technical spacecraft design documentation for various spaceflight systems. In this role, you will be accountable for providing vehicle and inter-element interfaces and designs on various configurations. You will be working closely with associated teams to detail the design of an end-item product. You will be an integral part of the design team transitioning from development phase, through first flight, into production. You will be required to build CAD models, system layouts, interface controls, and functional schematics to manage the design development for the configuration. Working with each of the design teams, you will implement and enforce top-down design principles, maintain the CAD product structure, and export CAD models for their analysis and system level integration. Collaboration is encouraged with various engineering teams to utilize Creo Parametric for configuration design and documentation.

As a coordinated configuration team member, you will support program concept development, interface management, procurement, assembly, integration, testing, and operations. You will be encouraged to use a background of knowledge building and integrating complex systems to drive configuration maturity towards crafting for maintainability, sustainability, manufacturing, and operations. To be successful, you will apply skillsets required to plan, layout, and maintain engineering data that represents the continued evolution of configuration designs such as detail, assembly, and installation drawings.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Build, modify, and maintain CAD models of spacecraft layouts, including but not limited to structures and mechanisms, avionics and power, fluids and propulsion, thermal, crew systems, and ground support equipment in Creo Parametric using top-down design principles

  • Develop interface control models and interface control drawings

  • Export CAD representations for system level analysis and integration

  • Assess configuration designs through concept development, interface management, procurement, assembly, integration, testing, and operations support

  • Coordinate with configurators, architects, and discipline leads to develop and maintain interface control and ensure seamless integration for the production phase

  • Application of relevant company, industry part design and drafting techniques to plan, layout, and maintain data representing the engineering designs as they evolve

Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience working in ProEngineer/Creo with Windchill familiarity

  • Experience managing large CAD assemblies and associated drawing releases

  • Experience creating fabrication and installation drawings

  • Successful candidates in this role typically have 5+ years of related experience in automotive, aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicle hardware.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired:

  • Experience using PTC ProPiping, ProCabling, or Routed Systems Designer

  • Experience with ASME Y14.100, Y14.5, Y14.41 drafting standards

  • Solid understanding of common manufacturing materials, GD&T, and tolerance/stack-up analysis

  • Knowledge of spacecraft components, installation, and fabrication methods of piping systems

  • Experience with a PDM version control database

Compensation Range for:

CO applicants is $36.06 - $50.48 WA applicants is $39.34 - $55.07
