What is a draftsman engineer?

Draftsman Engineers are professionals who create detailed technical drawings and plans used in construction, manufacturing, and engineering projects. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software or manual drafting techniques to illustrate the dimensions, assembly, and specifications of structures, machines, or systems. Their work is essential for communicating complex engineering concepts and ensuring accurate construction or production. Draftsman Engineers often collaborate with architects, engineers, and other team members to revise and finalize technical documents. They play a crucial role in transforming design concepts into precise, actionable blueprints.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a draftsman engineer?

To thrive as a Draftsman Engineer, you need strong technical drawing skills, proficiency in engineering principles, and typically an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in drafting, engineering technology, or a related field. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks, as well as knowledge of industry-specific standards, is essential. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills that set candidates apart. These skills ensure accurate technical drawings, efficient collaboration with engineering teams, and the successful realization of complex design projects.

How does a draftsman engineer typically collaborate with architects and other engineers during a project's lifecycle?

Draftsman Engineers frequently work alongside architects, civil, and mechanical engineers to transform conceptual designs into detailed technical drawings and blueprints. This collaboration involves attending project meetings, interpreting initial sketches or specifications, and making necessary adjustments based on team feedback. Communication is key, as Draftsman Engineers must ensure that their drawings comply with industry standards and reflect the intent of the broader project team. Effective teamwork not only streamlines workflows but also helps prevent costly design errors or miscommunications down the line.

Are draftsman engineers still in demand?

Draftsman engineers, also known as CAD technicians or drafters, continue to be in demand due to ongoing construction, manufacturing, and engineering projects that require detailed technical drawings. Proficiency in CAD software and industry-specific standards enhances employability in this field.

Marine Drafter/Engineering Support Technician

Ghostworks Marine

Holland, MI • On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 13 days ago

Job description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and hands-on Marine Drafter / Engineering Support Technician to support our Holland production operations. This role bridges engineering design and production, providing CAD-based visual aids, dimensioned drawings, and tooling support that help translate design intent into efficient, high-quality production execution.

The ideal candidate will have strong CAD skills (Rhino), a good understanding of marine construction, and the ability to collaborate closely with production, engineering, and quality teams. This position offers a unique opportunity to learn our processes firsthand—spending the first three months on the production floor before transitioning fully into the drafting and support role—to ensure a deep understanding of our workflows, materials, and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop 2D and 3D CAD drawings using Rhino and AutoCAD to support marine production projects.
  • Create visuals, layouts, and dimensioned drawings to aid production teams in understanding complex assemblies.
  • Collaborate with engineers, naval architects, and production leads to translate design concepts into accurate shop-ready documentation.
  • Support 3D tooling and fixture development on flat tables for production.
  • Ensure all drawings meet company and industry quality, safety, and accuracy standards.
  • Work closely with the Quality Management System (QMS) team, assisting in documentation organization and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Revise and update designs based on feedback from engineering and shop floor teams.
  • Configure CAD files to “built drawings” for bill of materials.
  • Prepare bills of materials and assist with process documentation and standardization.
  • Support the ongoing development of company drafting standards and best practices.

Training and Onboarding:

  • Spend approximately three months on the production floor learning company processes, construction methods, and quality standards before transitioning into the primary drafting/support role.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Drafting, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Industrial Design, or a related field.
  • Proven proficiency in Rhino and familiarity with AutoCAD or other 3D CAD tools.
  • Understanding of drafting techniques, manufacturing methods, and marine construction practices.
  • Strong visual communication and spatial reasoning skills.
  • Ability to interpret and create accurate technical drawings and documentation.
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Collaborative mindset with strong communication skills to interface with engineering, production, and quality teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the marine and composite boat building/manufacturing industry.
  • Exposure to QMS systems and process documentation.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling, tooling, and fixture design.
