Job Description:
Position Summary:
This position is responsible for creating and designing equipment, mechanisms, and optional features for both new and existing products, with a focus on function, cost-efficiency, manufacturability, and quality. Reporting to the Plant Manager, the role involves working from 2D and 3D models or blueprints to generate flat pattern sheet metal parts for laser cutting and press brake machines. The position requires frequent collaboration with manufacturing, the mechanical design team, sales, and management personnel.
Pay Rate: $27.00 - $31.00
Skills/Ability
  • Utilize AutoCAD (2014 and above) to generate flat pattern metal parts with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Program sheet metal parts for laser cutting using SigmaNest software.
  • Develop accurate flat pattern layouts with a strong understanding of sheet metal types and fabrication processes.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., Syspro), including importing BOMs and material call-outs.
  • Read and interpret manufacturing blueprints and technical specifications to ensure compliance with design and production standards.
  • Research and apply requirements from regulatory agencies such as UL, NSF, UMC, and NFPA, ensuring all designs meet applicable codes.
  • Provide technical support and collaborate with Sales, Drafting, and Manufacturing teams to improve design criteria and resolve production issues.
  • Maintain and update product design standards and documentation within the product data management system.
  • Identify and implement improved construction methods for enhanced product performance and manufacturability.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with cross-functional teams.
  • Solicit feedback from production personnel and troubleshoot design-related issues on the production floor.
  • Deliver organized, well-documented drawing projects independently and within time constraints.
  • Train team members on product designs and assist in standardizing selection criteria for parts.
  • Demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exhibit attention to detail, with the ability to self-check work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Adapt to changing workflow demands, manage time effectively, and work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Show proficiency in general PC skills and an ability to learn new software applications quickly.

Education/Experience:
  • Associate's degree preferred in Drafting Technology or Mechanical Engineering, OR High School Diploma + Vocational Training in CAD required.
  • Minimum 2 years relevant mechanical drafting experience.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
  • Office environment with heavy computer use.
  • Frequently required to sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and handle documents.
  • Occasionally required to walk, operate office equipment, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods.
  • Specific vision abilities required, including the ability to adjust focus to read floor plans, kitchen layouts, mechanical blueprints, and technical specifications.
  • Occasionally required to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
  • No travel required.
