What is a downstream process?

A Downstream Process refers to the series of steps involved in the purification and recovery of biological products, such as proteins, enzymes, or antibodies, after they have been produced by microorganisms or cells during fermentation or cell culture. It typically includes cell separation, product isolation, purification, and polishing to achieve the desired product quality and purity. Downstream processing is crucial for ensuring that biopharmaceutical products meet regulatory and safety standards before they reach the market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a downstream process engineer?

To thrive as a Downstream Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or biochemical engineering, knowledge of purification techniques, and typically a relevant degree. Familiarity with process control systems, chromatography, filtration technologies, and GMP compliance, as well as certifications like Six Sigma, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you excel in cross-functional teams and address complex production challenges. These skills ensure efficient, high-quality product recovery and compliance with industry standards in biomanufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in downstream process roles?

Professionals in downstream process roles often encounter challenges such as optimizing purification steps to maximize yield and product purity while minimizing costs and processing time. They must also troubleshoot issues related to equipment performance, scalability, and regulatory compliance, especially when transitioning from lab-scale to large-scale production. Collaboration with upstream teams, quality assurance, and engineering is critical to address these challenges and ensure a smooth workflow. Staying current with technological advances and regulatory requirements also plays a significant role in day-to-day success.

What is the difference between Downstream Process vs Upstream Process?

AspectDownstream ProcessUpstream Process
PurposePurifies and isolates the target product from the mixtureProduces the initial product, such as cell culture or fermentation
ActivitiesFiltration, chromatography, centrifugation, purificationCell growth, fermentation, media preparation
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, bioprocessing facilitiesBioreactors, fermentation tanks, labs
Required SkillsBioprocessing techniques, chromatography, filtrationMicrobiology, cell culture, fermentation technology

Downstream Process focuses on purifying the product, while Upstream Process involves producing the raw material. Both are essential steps in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, often working sequentially to ensure high-quality product output.

Mailroom Preparation Clerk

Location: Lexington, KY — Onsite
Address: 2432 Fortune Dr, Lexington, KY 40509
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM until clean desk; occasional Saturdays may be required based on business needs
Training: Approximately 4–8 weeks, on the job
Training Pay: $16/hour for the first 8 weeks
Production Pay: Piece-rate compensation following training

About the role: At Conduent, our Lexington team supports important healthcare-related operations by accurately processing sensitive information. As a Transaction Processing Associate I in our Tray Preparation function, you’ll help prepare specialty and returned mail for downstream processing.

This is a hands-on, production-focused position where accuracy, productivity, organization, and attention to detail are essential. You’ll work independently much of the day while being part of a large, collaborative production team.

What you'll do:

  • Collect certified, return-to-sender, and other specialty mail that has already been opened.

  • Use Excel and proprietary production systems to process and track mail.

  • Log certified mail tracking numbers and create trackable notices.

  • Photocopy envelopes and bulky items, including CDs, USBs, and other materials as required.

  • Organize processed materials into trays and prepare trays with the appropriate weight for downstream sorting.

  • Read and process English-language claim forms and related documentation.

  • Follow written procedures and work instructions consistently.

  • Maintain established quality and productivity standards throughout the production day.

  • Perform repetitive motions involving the wrists, elbows, and shoulders.

  • Work through clean desk, meaning you remain until all assigned work for the unit has been completed.

  • Collaborate with teammates during high-volume periods and cross-train in additional production functions as needed.

What you'll bring:

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when handling documents and mail.

  • Ability to follow written procedures and work instructions consistently.

  • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn production systems.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to work independently while maintaining quality and productivity standards.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift or move mail trays weighing up to 40 pounds.

  • Ability and willingness to work multiple 10–15-hour shifts on your feet when required by business needs.

  • Ability to work a clean-desk schedule and remain until assigned work is completed.

  • Ability to read and type in English, including information contained on English-language claim forms.

  • Ability to perform repetitive motions and view a computer screen for extended periods when required.

Preferred Experience:

You may be especially successful in this role if you have experience in:

  • Mailroom operations

  • Warehousing

  • Manufacturing

  • Production environments

  • Handling sensitive or confidential documents

  • Basic computer or equipment troubleshooting

  • Microsoft Word or Excel

What makes this opportunity different?

This isn’t simply a traditional mailroom position. You’ll be part of a diverse team supporting the processing of sensitive healthcare information and important client operations.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Learn multiple production functions through cross-training.

  • Build valuable experience in a professional production environment.

  • Develop your skills and take on additional responsibilities over time.

  • Contribute ideas that can help improve and streamline processes.

  • Grow your career within Conduent.

  • Work alongside a diverse and collaborative team.

Training and getting started:

You’ll receive on-the-job training designed to help you learn the processes and become comfortable in the production environment.

Training includes reviewing process documentation, working alongside experienced team members, hands-on practice, and continuous feedback. The expected training period is approximately 4–8 weeks.

A few things you should know:

Because this team processes private and confidential healthcare information, maintaining a secure production environment is extremely important.

There is a no-phone and no-bag policy on the production floor. Lockers are available for personal belongings, or items may be secured in your vehicle.

Lunches are unpaid, and employees clock out for their lunch period. Breaks are built into the piece-rate structure and are paid.

The production environment can be fast-paced, and the schedule may occasionally require Saturdays or extended shifts based on business needs.

Compensation and Benefits:

This position uses a piece-rate compensation model after the initial training period. Your production pay is based on the amount of work you successfully complete rather than a fixed hourly production rate.

There is no upper limit to your earning potential. As your proficiency and productivity increase, your potential earnings can increase as well.

For the first 8 weeks of training, the minimum pay rate is $16 per hour. Following the training period, the minimum rate is $13 per hour. The minimum rate is a floor—not a cap—and actual earnings may be higher based on productivity and proficiency.

Benefits are available beginning Day 1, including:

  • Health insurance

  • Dental insurance

  • Vision coverage

  • 401(k) and retirement savings options

  • Employer retirement contribution opportunities

  • Life and disability insurance

  • Paid holidays

  • Paid time off (PTO) and/or applicable vacation or sick time

Pay Transparency Laws in some locations require disclosure of compensation and/or benefits-related information. For this position, actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. In addition to base pay, this position, based on business need, may be eligible for a bonus or incentive. In addition, Conduent provides a variety of benefits to employees including health insurance coverage, voluntary dental and vision programs, life and disability insurance, a retirement savings plan, paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO) or vacation and/or sick time. The estimated salary range for this role is $26,600.00 - $33,250.00.

Ready to be part of the team?

If you’re dependable, detail-oriented, comfortable with physical and repetitive work, and motivated by a production environment where quality and productivity both matter, we’d like to hear from you. Apply today.
