Electrical Meter Technician – Job Description

Position Title: Electrical Meter Technician
Department: Operations / Field Services

 

Position Summary

The Electrical Meter Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of electric meters and related equipment. This role ensures accurate and reliable metering for residential, commercial, and industrial customers while adhering to safety regulations, utility standards, and company procedures. The technician will regularly perform fieldwork, interact with customers, and document all service activities.


Key Responsibilities

Meter Installation & Maintenance

  • Install, remove, and upgrade electric meters, including AMI/AMR devices.
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and functional testing of metering equipment.
  • Inspect meter sites to ensure compliance with codes, safety standards, and installation requirements.
  • Identify tampering, irregularities, or safety hazards and document findings appropriately.

Troubleshooting & Repairs

  • Diagnose meter performance issues such as inaccurate readings, communication failures, or power-quality problems.
  • Repair or replace defective meters, components, or connections.
  • Utilize testing equipment to confirm proper meter operation and voltage integrity.

Data Collection & Documentation

  • Record installation data, maintenance actions, test results, and field notes accurately in company systems.
  • Maintain detailed logs of completed work, meter inventories, and service orders.
  • Report any discrepancies, unsafe conditions, or system concerns in a timely manner.

Customer Interaction

  • Communicate with customers professionally regarding service appointments, meter issues, or access requirements.
  • Provide basic education on meter operations or changes when needed.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company safety protocols, OSHA requirements, and electrical safety guidelines.
  • Use proper PPE and maintain safety tools and equipment.
  • Ensure all work aligns with utility standards, local codes, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Experience in electrical work, utilities, field service, or related technical trade, preferred.
  • Basic understanding of electricity, circuits, and electrical safety preferred.
  • Ability to read technical diagrams, service orders, and wiring instructions.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and safely lift up to 50 lbs required.
  • Previous experience as a Meter Technician or utility field technician preferred.
  • Familiarity with AMI/AMR systems and meter-reading technology preferred.
  • Knowledge of local codes, NESC standards, and utility metering practices preferred.

Minimum Requirements:
