Dog Manager information

What does a dog manager do?

A Dog Manager is responsible for overseeing the care, training, and well-being of dogs in various settings such as kennels, doggy daycares, shelters, or training facilities. Their duties may include supervising staff, developing care routines, managing feeding and exercise schedules, and ensuring a safe environment for the animals. Additionally, they may interact with clients, coordinate adoptions or training programs, and handle administrative tasks related to animal care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dog manager?

To thrive as a Dog Kennel Manager, you need strong animal care knowledge, supervisory experience, and typically a background in animal science or related fields. Familiarity with kennel management software, animal health monitoring systems, and certification in pet first aid are often required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help in managing staff, clients, and ensuring animal welfare. These competencies are crucial for maintaining high standards of care, smooth operations, and a safe, positive environment for both animals and staff.

What are some common challenges faced by a dog manager when overseeing a team of handlers and dogs?

Dog Managers often encounter challenges related to coordinating schedules, ensuring consistent training standards, and addressing behavioral issues among the dogs. Balancing the needs of both the animal team and the human staff requires strong organizational and communication skills. Additionally, managers must stay updated on animal welfare regulations and best practices to create a safe, productive environment. Building positive relationships with handlers and fostering a collaborative atmosphere are also essential for success in this role.

Job description

Dog Daycare & Boarding Attendant

Love dogs? Want a job where you’re active, busy, and surrounded by them every day?

The Dog House in Bloomington, Indiana is hiring Dog Daycare & Boarding Attendants  to join our team!

We have shifts available throughout the day between 6:30 AM and 7:00 PM, making this a great opportunity for applicants looking for morning, daytime, afternoon, or evening hours. Overnight shifts are also available for fully trained attendants.

Tell us your availability when you apply—we may have a schedule that works for you!

We provide cage-free dog daycare and boarding 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our attendants are at the heart of what we do—keeping our canine guests safe, comfortable, clean, happy, and well cared for throughout their stay.

This is a hands-on, active job working directly with dogs. You’ll spend your shifts on your feet, supervising groups of dogs, cleaning, working with your team, and learning how to safely manage canine behavior in a group environment.

No professional dog-care experience? That’s okay. We provide training. We’re looking for dependable people who are eager to learn, work hard, communicate well, and genuinely care about doing a great job.

What You'll Do
  • Supervise dogs of all breeds, sizes, ages, and personalities in our cage-free group environment
  • Keep dogs safe, comfortable, engaged, and appropriately supervised
  • Learn canine body language, behavior, group-management techniques, and safe handling skills through our training program
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary environment throughout the facility
  • Work closely and communicate effectively with your teammates
  • Follow established safety, cleaning, and pet-care procedures
  • Help create a positive experience for every dog entrusted to our care
What We're Looking For

You don't need to be a dog expert when you start—but you do need to be reliable, responsible, hardworking, and willing to learn.

Applicants must:

  • Be comfortable working hands-on with groups of dogs of all breeds and sizes
  • Be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted
  • Be comfortable standing and moving for extended periods
  • Be willing to clean—cleaning is a significant part of excellent animal care
  • Be comfortable working outdoors for short periods in a variety of weather conditions, with safety always coming first
  • Communicate respectfully and work well as part of a team
  • Have some weekend and holiday availability
  • Be dependable. Our dogs and your teammates are counting on you to be here when you're scheduled.

And yes—we like to have fun together, too. Team activities and employee outings are part of The Dog House culture!

Benefits for ALL Team Members

We believe part-time employees deserve benefits, too.

  • Paid Time Off for all employees, based on our tiered system
  • Paid continuing education
  • $50 birthday bonus
  • $100 annual anniversary bonus
  • Annual holiday bonus based on earnings for the year
  • Increased holiday pay for Christmas and Thanksgiving
  • Complimentary dog daycare for your own pet(s) while you're working
  • 50% off boarding
  • 12 complimentary baths per year for your own pet(s)
Additional Benefits for Full-Time Team Members — 30+ Hours/Week
  • Dental insurance — 100% paid by The Dog House
  • Vision insurance — 100% paid by The Dog House
  • Life insurance — 100% paid by The Dog House
Pay & Opportunities for Growth
  • Starting pay: $15/hour — no experience required
  • Previous professional animal-care experience may be considered when determining starting pay
  • Opportunities for increased pay as you gain experience, complete training, take on additional responsibilities, and advance within The Dog House
  • We believe in developing and promoting our team members from within—many of our higher-paying positions are filled by employees who started in attendant roles
