What is a DoD DevOps engineer?

A DoD DevOps engineer is an IT professional who specializes in applying DevOps practices within the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) environments. They focus on automating and streamlining software development, deployment, and operations processes while ensuring all systems comply with stringent DoD security and compliance requirements. Their responsibilities typically include integrating security into the development pipeline, managing continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) tools, and collaborating across development, operations, and security teams to deliver reliable and secure software solutions for defense projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DoD DevOps engineer?

To thrive as a DoD DevOps Engineer, you need expertise in software development, system administration, and security protocols, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field and relevant DoD security clearances. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, and experience working in secure, compliant cloud environments (e.g., AWS GovCloud) are typically required, along with certifications such as Security+ or CISSP. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial for collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and ensuring mission-critical operations. These skills and qualities are vital for maintaining secure, efficient, and reliable software delivery pipelines in sensitive defense environments.

What are some common challenges faced by DoD DevOps professionals when working with classified or sensitive systems?

DoD DevOps professionals often encounter challenges related to strict security and compliance requirements when working with classified or sensitive systems. These can include navigating complex authorization processes, ensuring all automation and deployment tools meet federal security standards, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders to maintain secure CI/CD pipelines. Adapting modern DevOps practices to fit within the boundaries of DoD regulations can require extra documentation, testing, and communication. However, these challenges also provide valuable experience in secure software delivery and can open doors to advanced roles within defense technology.

Job description

One of our clients is seeking a DevOps Engineer to join their Engineering team responsible for the development, maintenance, and reliability of cloud-based applications on DoD platform environments. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Kubernetes, AWS/cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and DevSecOps and will help build secure, reliable, and scalable platforms.
Position: DevOps Engineer
Location: Fully Remote
Position Type: Part time
Clearance: Active Secret preferred; must be eligible for CUI access
Certification: DoD 8570 IAT II certification or ability to obtain one (e.g., Security+ CE)
Task Description:

The DevOps Engineer will be responsible for building, maintaining, and improving Kubernetes-based cloud infrastructure and automated deployment environments. The role will work closely with application and platform teams to manage infrastructure such as code, CI/CD pipelines, identity and access management, monitoring, security, and platform reliability.
The engineer will also troubleshoot deployment and infrastructure issues, participate in Tier 2 on-call support, document operational procedures, and contribute to DevSecOps and DoD compliance initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Build, maintain, and troubleshoot Kubernetes clusters and containerized applications across cloud environments, including AWS EKS and RKE2.
  • Develop and manage Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, Pulumi, or similar technologies.
  • Build, maintain, and optimize CI/CD pipelines, particularly GitLab CI and automated deployment workflows.
  • Manage AWS infrastructure including EC2, EKS, IAM, S3, and VPC.
  • Support identity and access management using Keycloak or similar platforms.
  • Implement and maintain monitoring, alerting, logging, and observability solutions.
  • Manage certificate lifecycle operations, including certificate renewals and automation.
  • Support container security, Iron Bank image compliance, ATO/C-ATO processes, and overall platform security.
  • Troubleshoot deployment failures, broken pipelines, infrastructure issues, and application integration problems.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, ADRs, architecture standards, and operational procedures.
  • Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations and support platform incidents.
  • Collaborate with application and engineering teams to establish DevOps and platform best practices.
  • Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, including deployment, management, and troubleshooting of clusters and workloads.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, Pulumi, or similar.
  • Strong experience with CI/CD, preferably GitLab CI or equivalent platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux/Unix administration and command-line tools.
  • Experience with AWS cloud services, preferably EC2, EKS, IAM, S3, and VPC.
  • Experience with Docker, container image builds, and container registries.
  • Strong ability to work with YAML for Kubernetes manifests, CRDs, Helm charts, and pipeline configurations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Must be eligible for CUI access.
  • Possess or be able to obtain DoD 8570 IAT II certification, such as Security+ CE.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active Secret security clearance.
  • Experience with UDS Core, Iron Bank, and C-ATO/ATO processes.
  • Experience with Keycloak or similar IAM platforms.
  • Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or similar monitoring and observability tools.
  • Proficiency in Go, Python, or Bash scripting.
  • Experience working in a DevSecOps environment with secure coding and vulnerability remediation.
  • Experience with GitOps tools such as ArgoCD or Flux.
  • Previous DoD experience, particularly supporting production ATO'd systems.
  • Experience with distributed architecture and everything-as-code approaches.
  • AWS certification related to platform or solutions architecture.
  • Experience developing architecture decision records, operational runbooks, and engineering standards.
