Documentary editing focuses on shaping real-life footage into compelling stories, often requiring a deep understanding of storytelling and factual accuracy. Video editing is broader, encompassing various types of video content, from commercials to social media clips. While both roles require editing skills, documentary editing emphasizes narrative construction within factual contexts, making it more specialized.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a documentary editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Documentary Editor, you need a strong grasp of storytelling, video editing principles, and experience with non-linear editing software, often supported by a degree in film, media, or related fields. Proficiency with tools like Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, or Final Cut Pro, as well as knowledge of formats and post-production workflows, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, time management, and collaboration are crucial soft skills that help editors craft compelling narratives and work well with directors and producers. These skills and qualities are vital for producing engaging, coherent documentaries that effectively communicate their message and meet production deadlines.

What are typical challenges faced by documentary editors when shaping a story from raw footage?

Documentary editors often encounter the challenge of organizing large amounts of unscripted footage into a compelling, coherent narrative. They must balance the director's vision with the available material, sometimes working with incomplete or evolving storylines. Tight deadlines, last-minute changes, and collaborating closely with directors, producers, and sound designers are also common aspects of the role. Strong communication and creative problem-solving skills are essential for overcoming these challenges and producing a polished final product.

What is documentary editing?

Documentary editing is the process of assembling, organizing, and refining recorded footage, interviews, audio, and other elements to create a cohesive and compelling nonfiction film or video. Editors work closely with directors and producers to shape the narrative, determine pacing, and ensure that the story is both engaging and accurate. This role often involves making creative decisions about what content to include or omit, as well as incorporating graphics, sound, and music to enhance the final product.

Job description

About Centr
Centr is a globally recognized wellness platform founded by Chris Hemsworth in 2019. Through fitness, food, and mindfulness, we provide the tools for people to live a happier, healthier life.
Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, we are a passionate team of content creators, strategists, engineers, designers, marketers, and brand builders.
At Centr, our core values include respect, transparency, accountability, and collaboration. We take pride in who we are and what we do. We don't just accept individuality; we encourage it and acknowledge the value diversity and inclusivity bring to our team.
About the role
We're looking for a Senior Video Editor with a talent for storytelling and all things digital. Whether it's a punchy 15-second ad designed to stop the scroll, or a five-minute emotionally driven mini-documentary for YouTube, you know how to shape footage into something that moves people. This role sits in Centr's in-house creative team; you're comfortable collaborating and sharing creative ideas on larger projects, or being self-sufficient and owning a project from concept through to final delivery, including sound design, mixing, and colour grading. You bring both the technical depth and the creative instincts to make every cut count.
Portfolio Required
Applicants must submit a portfolio to be considered for this position. Please attach your portfolio below or include a direct link to your website or online portfolio in your application.
Responsibilities:
  • Edit a broad range of video content across digital channels - from short-form paid social ads (:06, :15, :30) to long-form content including mini-documentaries, brand films, and YouTube series.
  • Own projects end-to-end, from reviewing raw footage and shaping the narrative arc, through to picture lock, coloring, sound design, and final delivery.
  • Devise inventive creative approaches to digital advertising, finding new ways to hook audiences and communicate the Centr brand within tight time constraints.
  • Handle all aspects of sound design and audio mixing, ensuring every deliverable sounds as polished as it looks.
  • Perform colour grading and finishing to a broadcast-quality standard. Help develop and maintain Centr's visual style, and drive brand consistency through our video assets.
  • Create and integrate motion graphics and basic animation to elevate video content, working collaboratively with the design team or with contracted specialists on more complex executions.
  • Adapt and resize content for multiple platforms and placements, ensuring each version is optimised for its format and audience.
  • Collaborate with the creative director, producers, and marketing team to understand briefs deeply and deliver work that achieves objectives.
  • Help establish and maintain post-production standards, templates, and workflows that keep the team efficient and output consistently high.
  • Stay across emerging formats, platform trends, and editing techniques to keep Centr's video content fresh and competitive.
  • Maintain an organised and well-structured asset and project library, ensuring files are archived, accessible, and backed up across the team.
  • Mentor and provide creative feedback to junior editors and contractors where required, helping elevate the quality of the wider team's output.
  • Comfortable working independently and taking full ownership of a project, as well as operating as a strong creative collaborator within a broader team.

Experience
  • 5+ years of professional video editing experience, with a strong portfolio demonstrating a variety of work across digital channels including paid social, organic content, and long-form video.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro and the broader Adobe Creative Cloud suite (After Effects, Audition, Photoshop).
  • Proven ability as a storyteller; you can craft a narrative from raw footage that is emotionally engaging, whether the format is a 15-second ad or a 5-minute documentary.
  • Hands-on experience with sound design, audio mixing, and colour grading.
  • Basic motion graphics capability (After Effects) and a good eye for design; you understand how type, colour, and visual rhythm contribute to overall polish and quality.

Personal Attributes
  • Collaborative and communicative
  • Drive & 'can do' attitude
  • Accountability
  • Entrepreneurial growth mindset
  • Ambitious and goal-oriented
  • Honesty and integrity
  • Develops effective working relationships
