What is a document reviewer?

Document reviewers are legal professionals who analyze, categorize, and evaluate documents relevant to legal cases or investigations. They review documents for relevance, confidentiality, privilege, and other criteria as determined by attorneys or legal teams. Document reviewers often work on large-scale projects, such as litigation, regulatory compliance, or mergers and acquisitions, to ensure that all necessary information is properly identified and handled. Their work is critical to the discovery process in legal proceedings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a document reviewer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Document Reviewer, you need a strong attention to detail, excellent reading comprehension, and a background in law, often supported by a JD or relevant legal education. Familiarity with e-discovery platforms like Relativity, Concordance, or Everlaw, as well as Microsoft Office, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, time management, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for efficiently handling large volumes of documents and collaborating with legal teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely completion of legal review projects.

What are some common challenges faced by document reviewers and how can they be managed?

Document Reviewers often deal with large volumes of legal documents under tight deadlines, which can be mentally demanding. Maintaining accuracy and attention to detail while reviewing repetitive content is crucial, as mistakes can have significant consequences in legal proceedings. To manage these challenges, reviewers typically use specialized software to streamline their workflow and participate in regular team check-ins to clarify questions about case-specific protocols. Staying organized, taking scheduled breaks, and communicating effectively with team leads help ensure both productivity and quality in the review process.

Can you work remotely in document review?

Yes, many document review jobs are available as remote positions, especially in legal, compliance, and e-discovery fields. These roles often require strong attention to detail, familiarity with review platforms, and the ability to work independently within set deadlines.

How do you become a document reviewer?

To become a document reviewer, candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as law, paralegal studies, or related areas. Experience with legal or compliance work, strong attention to detail, and familiarity with document management tools are often required; some roles may also require passing a background check or obtaining specific certifications. Training is usually provided on the job, and the position often involves working in a legal or corporate environment with standard working hours.

Is document review a good career?

Document review is a common entry-level role in legal and corporate settings, involving analyzing and organizing large volumes of documents for litigation or compliance. It often requires attention to detail, familiarity with document management tools, and can offer flexible schedules, but may involve repetitive work and limited advancement opportunities without additional qualifications.

Job description

Looking for a safe volunteer opportunity from home? This could be for you. Lend your attention to detail, data entry skills, computer skills, and organizational abilities to complete the necessary documentation steps to help ensure disaster victims can receive assistance. The virtual ID/Address Document Reviewer volunteer assists the American Red Cross and reviews and confirms client identification and address documents when a disaster client does not pass automatic verification and when two Disaster Action Team responders are not available.

To volunteer as a virtual ID/Address Document Reviewer, join the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) a volunteer program exclusive to Ohio residents in Franklin and Delaware County ages 55 years and older. We match volunteers ages 55+ with nonprofits in their community that either need or rely on volunteers to be able to provide their services. Funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and part of AmeriCorps Seniors, VANTAGE Agingโ€™s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is one of the largest volunteer networks in the nation for people 55 years and over. We partner with nonprofit agencies to match these older adults to their volunteer opportunities. RSVP projects link the skills of the volunteers with the identified needs of the community. We think of ourselves as the 'center hub' for our volunteers looking for opportunities. We offer many wonderful incentives and perks to our team of RSVP volunteers, this program is free and so rewarding to be a part of.
