Document Remediation information

What is document remediation?

Document remediation is the process of converting digital documents, such as PDFs or Word files, into accessible formats that can be used by people with disabilities, including those who rely on screen readers and other assistive technology. This process involves tasks like tagging elements properly, ensuring logical reading order, adding alternative text to images, and making sure forms are usable. The goal of document remediation is to meet accessibility standards such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), making information available to everyone.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a document remediation specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Document Remediation Specialist, you need strong attention to detail, knowledge of accessibility standards (such as WCAG and Section 508), and proficiency in document editing. Familiarity with tools like Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office Suite, and accessibility checkers, as well as relevant certifications like CPACC, is highly beneficial. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills help ensure accurate and efficient remediation processes. These skills are crucial for making digital documents accessible to all users, including those with disabilities, and for ensuring legal compliance.

What are some common challenges faced in a document remediation role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in document remediation often encounter challenges such as handling large volumes of documents with varied formats and ensuring compliance with accessibility standards like WCAG or Section 508. Addressing these challenges requires strong attention to detail, familiarity with assistive technologies, and regular collaboration with content creators and IT teams to clarify requirements and resolve issues. Staying updated on accessibility guidelines and using specialized remediation tools can also streamline the process, ensuring documents are both accessible and compliant.

  • Experience with planning and managing investigations and remedial design programs under state and Federal regulations (e.g., CERCLA, etc.) in the Pacific Northwest

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performing engineering analyses/evaluations for a range of multi-disciplinary projects, including application of innovative sediment remediation technologies, waterfront development/reuse, site/shoreline restoration, and source control projects
  • Preparing remedy design documents and supporting deliverables, including engineering calculations, cost estimates, bases of design reports, and integrated design and specifications packages
  • Evaluate the fate and transport of environmental contaminants in various matrices with an emphasis on the protection of marine and freshwater sediments
  • Project and task management, including team assignments and coordination, client management, and financial administration
  • Overall program strategic development, including further development of teaming partner relationships, client business development, internal team integration and collaboration, etc.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee implementation of multi-media field investigation programs, including field team and subcontractor management, laboratory engagement, quality assurance review, and characterization reporting.
  • Mentoring, supervision, and training of early-career and mid-level staff on engineering principles and design, depending on existing experience level

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in environmental or civil engineering
  • PE registration in Washington or Oregon preferred
  • 15+ years of experience in planning and designing sediment remediation projects, contaminated site investigation and remediation programs, and/or shoreline infrastructure and restoration programs
  • Knowledge and experience with State and Federal environmental regulations and their application in the Pacific Northwest
  • Clear and concise communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail, while maintaining the ability to view multiple, simultaneous projects in the context of big picture goals and objectives.
  • Ability to travel regionally for project team meetings and oversight)
