Reports to: Chief Financial Officer and Finance Director

Classification: Exempt

Supervisory Responsibilities: Yes

Position Mission

The mission of the Controller is to maximize the return on financial assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems. This position ensures legal and regulatory compliance for all accounting and financial reporting functions. The Controller also oversees fund and general accounting, accounts receivable/collection, treasury/cash management, payroll/benefits administration, and risk management.?

Essential Functions

The Controller is responsible as follows:

  • Provides timely status of financial condition of the company by collecting, interpreting and reporting key financial data internally and externally in conjunction with the Finance Director and the Data and Reporting Manager.
  • Calculates variances from the budget and reports significant issues to management; provides for a system of management cost reports.
  • Reports results, identifies trends and makes recommendations based on the analysis performed to solve day-to-day financial business problems.
  • Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that periodic bank reconciliations are timely and accurately completed.
  • Ensures that required debt payments are made on a timely basis.
  • Tracks financial covenants and performance ratios
  • Leads the external audit process
  • Leads tax return preparation with the Auditor.
  • In conjunction with the Finance Director and the CFO, applies advanced knowledge to perform a full array of complex financial analysis that may include income, profitability, liquidity, cash flow, capital, leverage, and asset and liability management.
  • Evaluates and advises the CFO on the impact of long-range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies and regulatory action.
  • Works closely with Senior Leadership, the CFO, the Finance Director, and IT to implement financial tools and solutions that are flexible and responsive, aiding the business with problem solving and decision making.
  • Provides timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends in order to assist the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Financial Officer, and the Board and other managers in performing their responsibilities.
  • Teach others about financial processes, drivers and systems ensuring information sharing and knowledge transfer.
  • Works with Resource Director and Policy & Resource Development to provide financial data for grant requests and ensure that systems are in place to track specific grant requirements, deliverables, etc.
  • Assists CFO, Resource Director, and Policy & Resource Development in working with financial institutions and other organizations to secure required capital for organization
  • Partners with CFO and Finance Director to evaluate cash management strategy and implement changes as necessary, ensuring that cash is being adequately managed.
  • Uses the Homewise, Inc. STARS database system, Sage Intacct, Bill.com, Paylocity, Microsoft Suite and other electronic tools to provide the best service to customers.
  • Complies with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.

Expected Outcomes

  • Accurate and timely publishing of Homewise’s and subsidiary financial statements by the 15th of each month.
  • Unqualified audit opinion with no significant findings or material weaknesses noted.
  • Ensuring continued development of team members and cross training for every task.

Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, economics, mathematics or a related field
  • 5+ years of financial / accounting analysis or related work experience in a financial institution.

Preferred

  • Active CPA designation
  • Non-profit experience
  • Sage Intacct experience
  • Master’s Degree/MBA in business, finance, economics, mathematics, or related fields.

Work Schedule

  • Hybrid, Homewise Office schedule, alternating between Santa Fe and Albuquerque Offices
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings or weekends as needed.

  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds
