Job description

Litigation Counsel – Spruce Power

Spruce Power is seeking a Litigation Counsel to join its Legal Department to manage the company’s litigation and arbitration docket from prelitigation through trial or final hearing. This is a hands‑on litigation role. The successful candidate will personally handle the substantive legal work on the company’s matters, including drafting, strategy, and advocacy, and will engage outside counsel where appropriate.

Key Responsibilities
  • Handle all aspects of the company’s litigation and arbitration, from receipt of a prelitigation demand letter through resolution by settlement, trial, or arbitration award.
  • Review and respond to pre‑litigation demand letters and develop resolution strategies.
  • Personally draft pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, briefs, demand responses, and other litigation documents.
  • Represent the company in arbitration proceedings, including those administered by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) and JAMS, and handle all related procedural and substantive requirements.
  • Conduct legal research and develop litigation strategy.
  • Appear in court and at hearings as needed, including small claims matters across multiple states.
  • Manage the company’s small claims matters across multiple states.
  • Engage, manage, and direct outside counsel while retaining ownership of strategy and case direction.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and reduce litigation risk.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders (compliance, operations, customer‑facing teams) to gather facts, documents, and witness information needed for case handling.
  • Track case status and deadline, and report on litigation portfolio status to the managing counsel.
Qualifications
  • J.D. and active law license in good standing in any U.S. state; license in California or New Jersey preferred.
  • 3–5 years of litigation experience, with substantial hands‑on courtroom and arbitration experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with AAA and JAMS arbitration rules and procedures.
  • Strong litigation drafting skills (pleadings, motions, discovery, briefs).
  • Experience independently managing a litigation caseload from intake through resolution.
  • Experience managing or directing outside counsel.
  • Experience with small claims court practice across multiple jurisdictions a plus.
  • Renewable energy, solar, or consumer finance industry experience preferred but not required.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a high‑volume, fast‑moving docket independently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Work Location

This is a hybrid position based in Houston, Texas. Team members work from the office four days each week, with one remote workday per week. Candidates should be comfortable working in person and collaborating closely with colleagues across the business. This role may also require occasional travel for court appearances, arbitrations, mediations, depositions, and other litigation‑related proceedings.
