Job description

Regular Schedule: 35 hours per week A full-time, non-merit, Assistant State's Attorney I vacancy exists in the State's Attorney's Office for Baltimore County, Criminal Prosecution Division. Non-Merit positions are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan. A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below.

Current and future vacancies occurring in any Office or Department of Baltimore County General Government may be filled from the list of eligible applicants. All interested transfer and promotional candidates must apply at this time. List all promotions and changes in job duties due to reclassification as separate work experiences on your application.

Examples of Duties The Assistant State's Attorney (ASA) in District Court handles hundreds of cases a week.

They handle all must appear traffic cases including DUI's, Hit & Runs, Fleeing and Eluding, Driving While Suspended, Driving Uninsured, etc. They also handle all of the criminal misdemeanor cases including domestic assaults, thefts, auto thefts, identity thefts and hundreds of miscellaneous other misdemeanors. Overall, the unit handles around 30,000 cases per year.

Each ASA is assigned multiple dockets a week (2-3) and must prepare the files, communicate with Defense Attorneys and physically go to court and handle all of the cases on the docket. Examples of Other Duties Performs other duties as required. Qualifications Required Qualifications Graduation from an ABA accredited law school.

Licensed to practice law in the State of Maryland, or eligible to waive into the bar of the State of Maryland. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the Maryland Rules of Evidence, as well as the Local Rules for the District of Maryland and Rules applicable to other courts and tribunals as may be applicable, and the Rules of Professional Responsibility. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local law.

Knowledge of County's best practices and procedures. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple complex matters. Communicate with exceptional oral and written communication.

Ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with others (inside and outside the Office of Law). Ability to work independently and meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks. Ability to maintain professionalism under pressure.

A strong sense of ownership of tasks and responsibilities. Strong interpersonal skills required to work with the public and various agencies. Strong writing and drafting skills.

Strong technology skills, including the ability to coordinate and conduct electronic discovery, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office software and legal research platforms such as Westlaw. A willingness to perform with minimal administrative support. Proof of Licenses, Certifications and Education Applicants are required to submit proof of licenses, certifications and education beyond high school to meet the required qualifications of the position.

Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant's major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable. Failure to submit proof of Licenses, Certifications and Education will result in your application not being considered.
