What is a DOCCS officer?

DOCCS officers, also known as correction officers, are professionals who work for the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. They are responsible for overseeing individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or who have been sentenced to serve time in a correctional facility. Their duties include maintaining order and security within the facility, supervising inmate activities, conducting inspections, and ensuring the safety of staff and inmates. They may also be involved in rehabilitation and reentry programs to help inmates transition back into the community. DOCCS officers play a critical role in public safety and the criminal justice system.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a DOCCS officer?

To thrive as a Corrections Officer (DOCCS), you need a high school diploma or equivalent, physical fitness, and a strong understanding of correctional procedures and security protocols. Familiarity with security monitoring systems, incident reporting software, and self-defense techniques is also important. Exceptional interpersonal skills, stress management, and sound judgment help officers navigate challenging situations and interact effectively with inmates and colleagues. These skills are crucial for maintaining safety, enforcing facility rules, and supporting rehabilitation efforts within correctional environments.

What challenges do DOCCS officers face, and how can they prepare for them?

DOCCS officers often face challenges such as maintaining safety in a correctional facility, managing interactions with inmates, and handling stressful or unpredictable situations. Adapting to shift work and working within a structured, hierarchical environment are also common aspects of the job. To prepare, candidates should focus on developing strong communication skills, emotional resilience, and a solid understanding of departmental policies and procedures. Training and ongoing professional development are provided, helping officers build the skills necessary to succeed and advance within the department.

Unit: Court Advocacy

Reports to: Bronx County Reentry Taskforce Coordinator

Status: Full Time; Regular; Non-Exempt

Pay Rate: $27.48 per hour (Approximately $50,000 Annually)

Days/Hours: Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm. Some evening hours will be necessary depending on program needs.

Organization Overview:

The Fortune Society, Inc. (Fortune) has been working for over 57 years in service to our mission: to support successful reentry from incarceration and promote alternatives to incarceration, thus strengthening the fabric of our communities. The organization has evolved into one of the nation’s preeminent reentry and justice-informed service organizations, providing formerly incarcerated people with the skills and wrap-around services needed to break the cycle of crime and incarceration and to build productive lives in their communities.

Fortune has grown steadily over the years to an agency with over $90 million in annual budget with approximately 600 staff. We anticipate that we will keep growing, both in size and depth of service. Fortune has a dual mission: both advocacy and service. The advocacy portion of our mission focuses on building a more just criminal legal system and reducing the barriers to reentry into society. The service side of Fortune has evolved to encompass a broad range of programs that started with employment and education and now includes a robust array of services, among them: alternatives to incarceration, supervised release, court advocacy, discharge planning within correctional facilities, licensed substance use and mental health treatment, a housing continuum ranging from emergency and transitional through permanent congregate and scattered site housing, assistance in obtaining benefits, a care management unit, HIV services, a food and nutrition program, and an arts program. Each service we provide is informed by the needs of the population we serve. Fortune currently serves approximately 18,000 people a year. Our program models are recognized, both nationally and internationally, for their quality and innovation. We have locations in Brooklyn, The Bronx, Manhattan and Queens.
