What is DNA sequencing?

DNA sequencing is the process of determining the exact order of nucleotides (adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine) within a DNA molecule. This technology is crucial for a wide range of applications, including genetic research, medical diagnostics, forensic science, and evolutionary biology. Modern sequencing techniques allow scientists to analyze entire genomes quickly and accurately, leading to advances in personalized medicine and our understanding of genetic diseases.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in DNA sequencing laboratories?

Professionals in DNA sequencing often encounter challenges such as maintaining sample integrity, troubleshooting instrumentation or software issues, and managing large volumes of data. Strict adherence to protocols is essential to avoid contamination or errors that could compromise results. Additionally, staying current with rapidly evolving technologies and techniques is important for maintaining high-quality output. Collaboration with bioinformaticians and other specialists is frequently required to interpret sequencing data and achieve research or clinical objectives.

What is the difference between Dna Sequencing vs Dna Analysis?

AspectDna SequencingDna Analysis
Primary FocusDetermining the exact order of nucleotides in a DNA moleculeInterpreting and understanding DNA data for research or diagnostics
Required SkillsLaboratory techniques, molecular biology, sequencing technologiesBioinformatics, data interpretation, statistical analysis
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, research facilitiesResearch labs, biotech companies, healthcare settings
Common CertificationsBiology, genetics, molecular biology certificationsBioinformatics, data analysis certifications

While Dna Sequencing involves generating the raw genetic data, Dna Analysis focuses on interpreting that data to derive meaningful insights. Both roles often overlap but serve different stages in genetic research and diagnostics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DNA Sequencing Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DNA Sequencing Specialist, you need a solid background in molecular biology, genetics, and laboratory techniques, often supported by a relevant degree in biology or biochemistry. Familiarity with sequencing platforms like Illumina or Oxford Nanopore, data analysis software, and experience following laboratory protocols are crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you manage complex experiments and collaborate with research teams. These competencies ensure accurate data generation, reliable results, and efficient workflow in genetic research and diagnostics.

Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Entry-Level DNA Sequencing Technician to join our production laboratory team. This role supports both Sanger sequencing and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing workflows in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment. The technician will be responsible for processing DNA samples, preparing sequencing reactions and libraries, operating laboratory instrumentation, maintaining accurate records, and supporting quality and turnaround time goals.
This position is ideal for someone with a strong scientific foundation who enjoys hands-on laboratory work, organization, and working as part of a team to deliver high-quality sequencing services.
Work Schedule
This position follows a Tuesday through Saturday schedule from 2:00 AM to 10:30 AM. Candidates must be able to reliably work this early-morning shift.
Key Responsibilities
  • Organize, sort, prioritize, and process incoming DNA samples according to daily production needs.
  • Perform DNA extraction, purification, and preparation for sequencing workflows.
  • Pipette DNA sequencing reactions accurately and efficiently.
  • Prepare sequencing libraries using Oxford Nanopore protocols while ensuring quality and consistency.
  • Perform DNA purification and related sample preparation steps for Sanger and ONT workflows.
  • Load, operate, schedule, and monitor sequencing instruments, including ABI 3730xl sequencers and Oxford Nanopore sequencers.
  • Operate routine laboratory equipment such as thermocyclers, centrifuges, automated liquid handlers, and related instrumentation.
  • Assist with troubleshooting sequencing runs, workflow issues, and instrument-related concerns to support quality and throughput targets.
  • Maintain accurate production records, batch documentation, logs, and other required quality records in compliance with laboratory standards.
  • Follow work instructions, checklists, batch records, and other controlled documents relevant to assigned responsibilities.
  • Support quality control activities, including review of sequencing performance and basic data quality checks.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, team leads, and cross-functional partners to meet turnaround time and production goals.
  • Perform other laboratory support duties as assigned by the Lab Team Lead or Supervisor.

Qualifications
