What is a DNA Lab job?

A DNA Lab job involves analyzing genetic material for various applications, such as forensic investigations, medical diagnostics, ancestry research, and biotechnology. Professionals in a DNA lab may extract, amplify, and sequence DNA to identify genetic markers or mutations. Common roles include DNA analysts, forensic scientists, and molecular biologists who follow strict protocols to ensure accurate results. These jobs typically require a background in genetics, biology, or forensic science, along with specialized laboratory training.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Dna Lab position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a DNA lab, professionals need a solid background in molecular biology, genetics, and laboratory techniques, often supported by a relevant degree such as biology, biochemistry, or forensic science. Familiarity with advanced instrumentation such as PCR machines, genetic sequencers, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS), as well as certifications like ASCP, is highly valued. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this environment. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate handling and interpretation of complex genetic data, which is critical for research integrity and reliable results.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in a DNA lab?

Professionals in a DNA lab often face challenges such as maintaining strict sample integrity to avoid contamination, troubleshooting complex instrumentation, and managing large volumes of data accurately. Collaborative teamwork is essential, as projects typically require coordination with researchers, technicians, and sometimes law enforcement or medical staff. Adapting quickly to evolving protocols and new technologies is also important in this dynamic field. Despite these challenges, working in a DNA lab offers rewarding opportunities to contribute to scientific discoveries, healthcare advancements, and forensic investigations.

Job description

Molecular Vision Laboratory (MVL), a CLIA-certified clinical service laboratory/molecular diagnostic laboratory based in Hillsboro, Oregon, is working on rare genetic conditions with the focus on eye diseases. MVL is part of Centrillion Biosciences, which has advanced research laboratories in US, China, and Taiwan for conducting research, development and commercialization of novel technologies in bioinformatics, genomics, chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology.

MVL is seeking a Laboratory Technologist for their clinical testing work. This position is in a fast-paced, start-up environment, with a heavy focus on genetic testing. Lab Technologist will divide their time between hands-on laboratory work, data analysis, and lab organization and maintenance. The selected individual will be working in a support role toward clinical genetic testing. The candidate will work with multiple scientists to assist with a broad range of duties including running clinical tests, following protocols, developing, or adapting new protocols for new needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Carry out tests and analysis regarding DNA molecular methods including DNA isolation, quantification, and quality check; Determine DNA quality by comparing NanoDrop data and compare them to the standard value range; Dilute or concentrate DNA when applicable; Purify samples for NGS library preparation when necessary and/or requested by researchers (depend on sample quality, decide which methods is best to purify DNA to avoid the least amount loss during the process i.e. bead purification or QIAGEN purification kit).

  • Maintain storage of samples (i.e., blood, saliva, and DNA) and sample disposal when requested.

  • Produce, analyze, document, and report results, achieving high-quality data in a timely manner.

  • Store and transfer data internally for further analysis and externally with related MVL customers.

  • Quality Assurance: Validate and release test results, and strictly adhere to quality control policies to ensure laboratory accuracy.

  • Record Keeping: Record detailed findings, update medical information systems, and communicate diagnostic results directly with lab supervisor.

  • Adjust and adapt to new SOPs and workflows as throughput capacity grows.

  • Work neatly, keep lab bench and storage areas clean.

  • Professionally handle the pressure of aggressive deadlines while maintaining data quality.

  • Demonstrated organizational abilities and capable of successfully carrying out a variety of detailed tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS/MS in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics or related field.

  • Comfortable working at a BSL 2 Laboratory and handling hazardous materials.

  • Familiarity with automatic pipettes, handling of light sensitive reagents, and scale-up of procedures are a plus.

  • Strong analytical, technical, and data interpretation skills, with the ability to manage stressful, high-volume workflows while strictly following safety protocols.

  • Must have excellent organizational skills and be able to maintain careful attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated experience keeping accurate and detailed laboratory records.

  • Capable of working in a team environment with the ability to analyze, interpret data, recognize quality failures, and proactively seek help.

  • Proficiency with standard software (e.g., Microsoft Office) is required.

  • Ability to thrive in a demanding start-up environment with a positive, productive, professional attitude.

  • Experience in a high throughput molecular lab or services lab is desirable.

  • Experience with automated liquid handling platforms is a plus.

  • Job location is in Hillsboro, OR; candidates local to the area or willing to relocate will be considered.
