Job description

TITLE: Assistant Coach Menโ€™s Basketball

DEPARTMENT: Athletics

REPORTS TO: Head Coach, Menโ€™s Basketball

CLASSIFICATION: Staff-12 months

EFFECTIVE DATE: TBD

STANDARD WORK HOURS: 37.5 hours per week

LOCATION: On-Site-Main Campus

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Exempt


JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Head Coach, Men's Basketball, the Assistant Coach assists in the administration and operation of the University's NCAA Division II Men's Basketball program. Responsibilities include coaching student-athletes, recruiting and retaining qualified student-athletes, assisting with practice and game preparation, supporting student-athlete academic success, coordinating assigned operational activities, and ensuring compliance with all applicable NCAA, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), University, federal, and state rules, regulations, and policies. This position requires a regular, reliable, and consistent on-campus presence to effectively perform coaching, recruiting, supervisory, and administrative responsibilities and is not suitable for remote work except as approved in accordance with University policy.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists the Head Coach in planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of the Men's Basketball program.
  • Assists in organizing, preparing, and conducting individual and team practices, conditioning sessions, competitions, and other athletic activities designed to maximize student-athlete development and team success.
  • Provides instruction and skill development to student-athletes during practices, competitions, and individual training sessions.
  • Assists in developing offensive, defensive, and special game strategies while evaluating individual and team performance throughout the season.
  • Assists in identifying, evaluating, recruiting, and retaining academically qualified student-athletes in compliance with NCAA and SIAC regulations.
  • Monitors and supports the academic progress, eligibility, and overall well-being of student-athletes while promoting academic achievement, personal responsibility, sportsmanship, and good citizenship.
  • Ensures compliance with all NCAA, SIAC, University, conference, federal, and state rules, regulations, and reporting requirements applicable to intercollegiate athletics.
  • Assists with coordinating team travel, scheduling, equipment management, practice logistics, and other operational aspects of the program.
  • Assists with camps, clinics, fundraising initiatives, alumni engagement, community outreach, promotional activities, and special events supporting the Men's Basketball program.
  • Represents the University and Athletics Department in a professional manner when interacting with student-athletes, parents, alumni, donors, media representatives, conference officials, community organizations, and the public.
  • Maintains accurate recruiting, compliance, and program records as assigned.
  • Attends departmental meetings, University functions, professional development activities, and other events as assigned.
  • Maintains a regular, reliable, and consistent on-campus presence to effectively perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the sport of basketball, including coaching strategies, player development, and game management.
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division II rules, SIAC regulations, recruiting practices, eligibility requirements, and compliance standards.
  • Knowledge of effective recruiting techniques and the ability to identify and evaluate prospective student-athletes.
  • Ability to instruct, motivate, mentor, and develop student-athletes while fostering academic success and personal growth.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, employees, alumni, community partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to interpret and apply University policies, NCAA regulations, and conference rules.
  • Knowledge of travel coordination, scheduling, and athletic program operations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and make effective decisions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • This position does not have regular supervisory responsibility but may provide functional direction to student employees, graduate assistants, or volunteers as assigned.



OTHER DUTIES:

  • Other related duties as assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of collegiate basketball coaching experience or an equivalent combination of collegiate, professional, or other directly related coaching experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA recruiting and compliance requirements.
  • Master's degree is preferred.
  • Previous NCAA Division II coaching experience is preferred.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with University requirements.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, or the ability to obtain within the timeframe established by the University.
  • Must successfully complete all NCAA and University-required compliance and recruiting education.




WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed in offices, athletic facilities, and outdoor venues and requires frequent interaction with student-athletes, employees, and the public.
  • Frequent evening, weekend, holiday, and extended work hours are required based on practice, competition, recruiting, and travel schedules.
  • Frequent overnight travel is required for recruiting and athletic competition.
  • Work involves moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, demonstrating athletic skills, and occasionally lifting and moving equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Work may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, loud noise, and other conditions commonly associated with athletic facilities and sporting events.
