Position Summary

Reports To: Head Men's Basketball Coach
Status: Exempt
The Associate Head Coach for Men's Basketball plays a vital role in the success and growth of the program. Working closely with the Head Coach and Director of Athletics, this position helps lead all aspects of the program, including recruiting, player development, team operations, and program administration.
This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the student-athlete experience while helping develop a competitive and values-driven basketball program. The Associate Head Coach also assumes leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Head Coach and serves as a key mentor for student-athletes both on and off the court.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in developing and maintaining an athletically competitive NCAA Division II men's basketball program.
  • Support all aspects of the program, including scheduling, travel, off-season conditioning, budget management, and equipment inventory.
  • Assist with practice and game planning, scouting, and film analysis.
  • Foster a positive team culture grounded in integrity, accountability, and excellence.
  • Assist in recruiting, retaining, and graduating student-athletes who align with FPU's mission and academic standards.
  • Ensure adherence to NCAA , conference, and institutional recruiting policies.
  • Promote holistic student development - academic, spiritual, social, and athletic.
  • Comply with NCAA Division II, conference, and university regulations and policies.
  • Assist in submitting NCAA and institutional forms accurately and on time.
  • Maintain accurate records related to eligibility, participation, and compliance.
  • Represent Fresno Pacific University and the Athletics Department with professionalism and integrity.
  • Engage in meaningful community service and outreach activities involving student athletes.
  • Participate in fundraising, alumni relations, and Sunbird Club initiatives in coordination with Athletics and university Advancement.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to serving and inspiring students and colleagues in a context of a Christian University, integrating your Christian faith into your role and responsibilities.

Qualifications
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Experience in intercollegiate or competitive coaching
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Proven commitment to academic and athletic excellence
  • Ability to recruit and mentor student-athletes within a Christ-centered educational environment
  • Understanding of and commitment to NCAA Division II regulations

Preferred:
  • Master's degree in a related field
  • Successful experience as a collegiate head or assistant coach
  • Experience in fundraising, budget management, and community engagement
  • Demonstrated success in developing competitive athletic programs

Environmental Conditions:
  • Indoors in a normal office environment with moderate exposure to excessive noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes at least eighty percent (80%) of the time.
  • Frequent computer use at a workstation, up to eight hours per day.
  • Frequently work at a fast pace with unscheduled interruptions.
  • Drive personal or University vehicles to appointments.
  • Public contact position requiring professional apparel, personal hygiene, and grooming.

Physical Demands:
  • This position requires active participation in practices and training sessions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: stand, move, and demonstrate sport-specific techniques, remain in a stationary position 80 % of the time, be able to move about inside the office to access file cabinets/office machinery etc., operate a computer and keyboard and other office productivity machinery such as calculators/copy machines/printers. The employee is occasionally required to position self to reach items on the floor and in high cabinetry.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Employee must be able to communicate with others to exchange information including both over the telephone and in-person communication with callers and community members and be able to read a computer screen and paper documents.
