JOB SUMMARY

The position involves performing a variety of semiskilled and skilled maintenance and construction work and operating a variety of heavy equipment in the maintenance and construction of roadways, storm drainage and other public works facilities and systems.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Operates heavy equipment of various sizes and types including loader, backhoe, grader, oil distributor, hi-lift, etc.
  • Operates dump and other trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various materials or equipment.
  • Operates dump truck with a snowplow and salt/cinder spreader in the removal of ice and snow.
  • Operates trucks pulling a float or other equipment.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to materials hauled, work performed, job location, hours worked, etc.
  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement patching, ditch digging, shoveling, jack hammering, chain sawing, and other physical labor necessary.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
  • Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment, such as air compressor, brush chipper, brush hog, chain saw, jackhammer, or mechanized broom.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the training of new or lower-level employees to increase their skills and promote safety in the maintenance and construction of roads and storm drainage facilities.
  • Places traffic control devices and performs duties as flagger for work zone traffic control in compliance with the County’s standards and guidelines.
  • Performs some work as part of the County’s Emergency Operations Plan.
  • Serves on various employee or other committees as assigned.
  • Performs work at assigned location during specified business hours.
  • Performs related additional duties as required and assigned.
