Job description

Position Summary:
The Overhead Groundman is a semi-skilled position supporting line crews in the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead distribution systems. This role is critical in maintaining worksite safety, material readiness, and supporting lineworkers through proper equipment handling and setup. The Groundman performs physically demanding work outdoors in all weather conditions and is expected to follow directions closely while learning essential aspects of utility linework.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the construction, maintenance, and repair of energized and de-energized overhead distribution systems under direct supervision.
  • Load, unload, and organize tools, materials, and equipment on trucks and job sites.
  • Identify and sort different sizes and types of materials for pre-assembly (crossarms, insulators, hardware, etc.).
  • Set up work zones, traffic control, and grounding systems in accordance with safety standards.
  • Maintain and safely operate company vehicles, trailers, and power tools in good working condition.
  • Support line crews by preparing tools, assembling materials, and ensuring the job site remains clean and organized.
  • Understand and follow Minimum Approach Distance (MAD) requirements and maintain safe working clearances at all times.
  • Assist in rigging operations, pulling wire, framing poles, and other linework tasks as directed.
  • Perform physically demanding labor, including lifting up to 60 lbs, climbing, kneeling, digging, and working at heights or in trenches.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings and actively promote a safe work environment.
  • Participate in safety meetings and tailgate briefings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet project deadlines and operational needs.

Note: These responsibilities are not all-inclusive and may be modified to reflect operational changes.
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 0-2 years of relevant field experience or technical training in utility or construction preferred.
  • Basic understanding of utility line construction, tools, and safety protocols.
  • Ability to read and understand work orders, safety instructions, and basic schematics.
  • Familiarity with grounding procedures and equipment setup is preferred.
  • Capable of working outdoors in varying weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a crew.
  • General knowledge of OSHA safety standards for energized and de-energized work.
  • Valid CDL Class A or willingness to obtain within a designated timeframe.
  • Current OSHA 10 or related safety certifications preferred.

Physical Demands:
  • Regularly required to talk, hear, and communicate clearly.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, and work in awkward positions.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 60 lbs.
  • Use hands to handle tools, materials, and operate equipment.
  • Must be able to work in outdoor environments, including inclement weather, heat, cold, and uneven terrain.

Work Environment:
  • Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration.
  • Occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions on construction job sites, including mud, dust, and uneven terrain.
  • The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
  • This position is performed primarily outdoors in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.
