What are some common challenges Distribution Designers face when coordinating with field crews and project managers?

Distribution Designers often coordinate closely with field crews and project managers to ensure that electrical distribution plans are practical and meet project requirements. A common challenge is translating technical designs into actionable steps that field crews can execute, especially when unexpected site conditions arise. Communication is key, as designers must clearly convey design intent and quickly adapt plans based on feedback from the field. Successful Distribution Designers are proactive in addressing issues and adept at collaborating with multiple stakeholders to keep projects on track.

What are Distribution Designers?

Distribution Designers are professionals who plan and design electrical power distribution systems. They create layouts for power lines, transformers, and other equipment to ensure reliable electricity delivery to homes, businesses, and other facilities. Their work involves analyzing site conditions, following safety regulations, and coordinating with engineers, utility companies, and construction teams. Distribution Designers play a crucial role in modern infrastructure by making sure electrical systems are efficient, safe, and meet regulatory standards.

  • Acts as customer point-of-contact throughout the work management process by receiving and responding to customer phone calls and emails. Will need to update tracking system.
  • Create, edit, analyze and implement gas facility data updates from job construction sketches, as-built sheets, or mobile applications using standardized symbology and data placement business rules, related to civic improvement, rehab or other existing work.
  • Meet for preconstruction meetings and/or any issues that may occur during construction.
  • Perform electric power calculations for determining capacity and effective sizing of distribution material and equipment.
  • Prepare mockups and designs as needed
  • Performing QA/QC of distribution line designs and construction packages prepared by other designers.
  • Work with the Project Managers and other associated teams to meet deadlines, aid in engineering decisions, and collaborate on Projects.
  • Assisting in the development of distribution engineering design philosophies, standards, details, and specifications.
  • Continuously seeking improvements to our project execution processes, including safety by design, quality, and consistency.
  • Mentoring, and/or training Designers, CADD Technicians and administrative staff.
  • Report to client office or Halff office daily
  • All other duties as assigned.

What you will need:
  • Must have a minimum of 8 years or more experience designing distribution designs for both overhead and underground electric distribution lines.
  • Proficient in creating plan and profile distribution designs in AutoCAD.
  • Experience with CAD-based or GIS-based design tools for electric power infrastructure.
  • High-level of interpersonal relationship, communications, facilitation, team building, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience applying relative industry codes and standards, including NESC and NEC.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Confident interacting closely with clients, management, and design teams.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Located within proximity to our Halff office in San Antonio, Texas.
  • Embrace being an active participant of our employee-owned firm.
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal behaviors toward electric utility providers, associates, and customers.

Preferred Qualifications:
