What is a Discretionary Trader job?

A Discretionary Trader is a financial professional who makes trading decisions based on market analysis, experience, and judgment rather than following automated systems or strict algorithms. They typically use technical and fundamental analysis to identify profitable opportunities while managing risk and capital effectively. Discretionary traders often work for hedge funds, proprietary trading firms, or financial institutions, though some operate independently. Their success depends on their ability to interpret market movements, control emotions, and adapt to changing conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Discretionary Trader position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Discretionary Trader, you need a strong understanding of financial markets, risk management principles, and trading strategies, usually backed by a degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with trading platforms, analytical software, charting tools, and sometimes relevant certifications like CFA or Series 7 are valuable. Strong decision-making abilities, resilience under pressure, and disciplined self-motivation distinguish top performers in this role. These qualities are vital for effectively navigating volatile markets and making informed, real-time trading decisions that drive profitability.

What does a typical day look like for a Discretionary Trader?

A typical day for a Discretionary Trader begins with analyzing global market news and economic data to inform potential trade setups. Throughout the trading day, you will monitor multiple financial instruments, execute trades based on your own analysis and strategies, and adjust positions in response to market movements. At the end of the day, reviewing performance, documenting trade rationale, and refining strategies are essential tasks. This dynamic and fast-paced environment requires a high level of focus, adaptability, and the ability to make quick decisions.

Job description

About Us:Founded 20 years ago and headquartered in Chicago, the DV Group of financial services firms has grown to more than 600 people operating throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Since spinning out of a large brokerage firm in 2016, DV Trading has rapidly scaled as an independent proprietary trading firm utilizing its own capital, trading strategies, and risk management methodologies to provide liquidity to worldwide financial markets and hedging opportunities to commodity producers and users. • Leverage DV Trading's platform, technology, and support to grow your book

Requirements:
  • At least 1 year of experience on a professional relative value trading desk
  • A track record of trading profitable RV strategies in a professional setting
  • Strong preference for experience using factor models in correlated products
  • Sharp quantitative instincts, strong market intuition, and disciplined risk management
  • A self-directed trader who wants real ownership and accountability

Benefits:
  • Discretionary bonus eligibility
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • HSA, FSA, and Dependent Care options
  • Employer Paid Group Term Life and AD&D Insurance
  • Voluntary LTD, Life & AD&D insurance
  • Flexible vacation policy
  • Retirement plan with employer match
  • Paid parental leave
  • Wellness Programs

Why DV Trading:
  • Trade with firm capital
