Job Description:

  • The Head Coach must demonstrate a strong commitment to an education-based extracurricular philosophy, providing a structured, developmentally appropriate program that becomes increasingly competitive over time. The successful candidate will understand the vital role extracurricular activities play within the total school program and their impact on the social, emotional, intellectual, and personal development of students.
    The Head Coach is expected to model exemplary moral character, leadership, and professional behavior, adhering to the highest standards of ethics and integrity. Responsibilities include teaching and promoting teamwork, communication, strategic thinking, sportsmanship, and digital citizenship while fostering a positive and inclusive competitive environment. The Head Coach will serve as a positive role model for students, spectators, and the school community; treat participants, opponents, officials, and event organizers with dignity and respect; and uphold the highest level of responsibility and conduct expected of all Howland Local School District employees.

  • Must demonstrate strong organizational and time-management skills and dependability in meeting schedules, deadlines, and program responsibilities.
  • Must demonstrate a willingness to work collaboratively with the administration, activities director, teachers/staff, parents/families, other coaches and programs, and the board-approved booster organization.
  • Must hold a valid State of Ohio Pupil Activity Permit and meet all requirements necessary to maintain the permit.
  • Must successfully complete BCI/FBI background checks and drug testing as required.

Program Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the head of the entire esports program, including oversight of all varsity and developmental teams.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive esports program that aligns with the district's educational mission while promoting competitive success and positive student experiences.
  • Must be knowledgeable about games currently in rotation within the competitive esports landscape at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of the core strategies for games in the competitive rotation, including maps, matchups, team compositions, rotations, lineups, objectives, and other game-specific concepts.
  • Coordinate practice schedules, competition schedules, and team participation through Esports Ohio and other sanctioned leagues or organizations.
  • Be willing to coordinate with opposing coaches and league administrators to schedule competitions on various days and times throughout the season.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in troubleshooting and maintaining gaming hardware, software, operating systems, peripherals, and network-related issues. Assist with replacing, upgrading, and configuring computer components as necessary.
  • Actively maintain, inspect, and update gaming equipment to ensure students have access to reliable, competition-ready technology.
  • Be familiar with and effectively utilize communication and competition platforms such as Discord, LeagueOS, Esports Ohio systems, and other applications adopted by the league.
  • Develop and supervise offseason training opportunities, recruiting efforts, and activities that promote student participation and program growth.
  • Plan and implement fundraising initiatives and actively seek community partnerships to offset the significant fixed and variable costs associated with operating and maintaining a competitive esports program.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of equipment, software licenses, and technology resources while recommending future purchases and upgrades as needed.
  • Promote responsible digital citizenship, teamwork, leadership, communication skills, and appropriate online behavior among all participants.
