Position DetailsPay: $22.00 per hourStatus: Grant-funded, seasonal positionSeasonal rotation: Three months working followed by two months offLocation: Based at Station 5 Actual start and end dates will depend on weather conditions and operational needs.BenefitsAs a seasonal employee, this position is eligible for:Sick leave: Eight hours accrued per month during active working months.Personal leave: Sixteen hours annuallyPosition OverviewUnder the general supervision of the DFM/Community Risk Reduction Coordinator, the Community Risk Reduction Technician performs hands-on work to reduce hazardous fuel loads throughout the District. Responsibilities include conducting defensible-space assessments, assisting with the District's Community Risk Reduction trailer and wood-chipper programs, helping residents with wildfire-mitigation projects, and maintaining accurate records.The technician also represents the District at community events, supports public education, promotes wildfire preparedness, and performs other related duties as assigned.Why Join KCFD1?This position offers an opportunity to perform meaningful, hands-on work that directly helps protect homes, neighborhoods, and community members from wildfire risk. You will work alongside KCFD1 personnel while gaining experience in community risk reduction, public education, and wildfire mitigation.What You'll DoConduct defensible-space assessments.Perform vegetation removal, pruning, and fuel-reduction work.Support the District's wood-chipper and Community Risk Reduction trailer programs.Help residents identify and complete wildfire-mitigation projects.Assist with public education and community outreach.Maintain accurate records of Community Risk Reduction activities.What We're Looking ForStrong customer service and communication skills.The ability to safely operate hand and power tools.Comfort performing physically demanding work outdoors.Dependability, sound judgment, and the ability to work as part of a team.An interest in wildfire prevention and community service.Minimum QualificationsValid Oregon driver's license.Preferred QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED.ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800.Experience with defensible space, fuels management, home hardening, or home-ignition-zone assessments.Knowledge of risks associated with living in the wildland-urban interface.Knowledge of wildfire behavior, fire prevention, and fuel-reduction strategies.Other relevant work experience, education, or training related to community risk reduction.Preferred qualifications are not required to apply.Physical Requirements and Work ConditionsThis position involves physically demanding indoor and outdoor work. Employees must be able to remain on their feet for extended periods, frequently lift up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, and safely operate equipment such as chainsaws, weed eaters, and pruning tools while using required PPE. Duties may also involve climbing, balancing, kneeling, and crouching. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to qualified individuals with disabilities.The position generally works eight hours per day, five days per week, for a total of 40 hours. The supervisor may authorize schedule variations. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for special projects or community events, with advance notice provided when possible.
