What is disaster response?
What are disaster response jobs?
Disaster response jobs focus on providing emergency relief after a natural or human-made disaster. In this role, you may be asked to take action shortly after a disaster occurs, help with planning and preparation before disasters strike, and help with management during a crisis. The jobs themselves take a variety of forms, from working on the ground to rescue people and pass out supplies to managing communications or raising public awareness about threats. State and federal governments provide many disaster response jobs, but many non-profit and humanitarian organizations also respond to disasters. These roles are not the same as firefighters or police. While both help with disasters, disaster response jobs focus on events like earthquakes, major wildfires, or outbreaks of disease.

What is the difference between Disaster Response vs Emergency Medical Technician?
| Aspect | Disaster Response | Emergency Medical Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Disaster response training, certifications in emergency management, first aid, and sometimes specialized courses | EMT certification, CPR, first aid |
| Work Environment | Field operations during disasters, including natural and man-made events, often in challenging conditions | Pre-hospital emergency care, ambulances, hospitals |
| Employer & Industry | Government agencies, NGOs, emergency management firms | Ambulance services, hospitals, clinics |
Disaster Response involves coordinating and providing aid during large-scale emergencies, often requiring specialized training and working in challenging environments. Emergency Medical Technicians focus on providing immediate medical care in emergency settings, primarily within healthcare and ambulance services. While both roles respond to emergencies, Disaster Response covers broader disaster management activities, whereas EMTs specialize in medical treatment.

Job description
ICF is seeking experienced emergency management professionals to join our Disaster Response Planning Section Reservist Cadre. This is an On-Call position supporting disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and resilience missions across the United States. Assignments are activated based on project and disaster operational needs and may involve deployments to Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs), Joint Field Offices (JFOs), Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs), client sites, field locations, or remote environments. Deployment opportunities are not guaranteed and may vary in duration, location, and frequency.
Reservists are typically activated for disaster events, emergency exercises, planning projects, and surge support requirements. Candidates should be prepared to deploy with limited notice, work flexible schedules that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, and support incident operations in dynamic and fast-paced environments.
About On-Call Employment with ICF
Due to the seasonal or project-specific nature of our disaster and emergency management work, ICF hires professionals as "On-Call" employees. On-Call employees are scheduled for work as it becomes available, with the freedom to accept or decline assignments. Individuals may work on concurrent projects outside of their ICF assignments, provided there is no conflict of interest.
Key Responsibilities - What you will be doing
Serve in Planning Section leadership or unit-level roles supporting disaster response, recovery, preparedness, and resilience operations.

Maintain incident documentation, records management processes, and official operational files.
Participate in planning meetings, operational briefings, after-action activities, and other incident management functions.
Support Incident Management Teams (IMTs), Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs), disaster recovery operations, exercises, and emergency management initiatives.
Assist communities and clients in preparedness, response, recovery, mitigation, and resilience efforts
Please attach a reverse chronological, bullet-point concise resume (1 to 3 pages) addressing minimum and preferred qualifications, including job title, employer, dates of employment.
