Headwaters Relief Organization grew out of a grassroots response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since then, we have evolved and diversified. Our early efforts included assisting with clean-up and re-building of homes locally and nationally. Today, our services have expanded to include public health, education, psychosocial and medical support and international responses.
Position: Non-Profit Program Director - Headwaters Relief Organization
Location: Golden Valley, MN with frequent local and occasional national and/or international travel required. Work is performed in a combination of office, remote, community, event, and disaster response environments consistent with organizational needs.
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with flexibility for evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency response situations.
Wage: $60,000 annual salary including Full-Time benefits, Paid Time Off, and more!
Job Summary:
The Headwater Relief Organization Program Director is responsible for coordinating and administering Headwaters Relief programs, volunteer services, disaster response operations, events, communications, and daily nonprofit operations. This position works closely with the Executive Director to implement organizational priorities while ensuring high-quality service to volunteers, donors, beneficiaries, and community partners. The Program Director serves as a key operational leader supporting organizational growth, community engagement, fundraising activities, and program effectiveness.
Essential Job Duties:
Program Operations
  • Oversee the daily operations of Headwaters Relief Organization.
  • Coordinate organizational programs and ensure services are delivered effectively.
  • Maintain organizational records, procedures, inventories, and reporting systems.
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and organizational processes.
  • Manage the Haiti Child Sponsorship Program.

Volunteer Leadership
  • Recruit, onboard, train, schedule, and retain volunteers.
  • Provide leadership and direction to volunteers, team leaders, interns, and temporary staff.
  • Track volunteer participation and maintain volunteer records.
  • Develop volunteer recognition and appreciation initiatives.

Disaster Response Coordination
  • Coordinate disaster relief deployments and response logistics.
  • Organize volunteer assignments, travel, documentation, and operational support.
  • Assist with disaster preparedness planning and response readiness.
  • Support volunteers before, during, and after deployments.

Events & Community Engagement
  • Plan and coordinate fundraising events, community outreach activities, and organizational events.
  • Manage event logistics, vendors, volunteers, and operational planning.
  • Evaluate event outcomes and recommend improvements.
  • Represent the organization at community meetings, events, and partner activities.

Communications & Public Relations
  • Develop newsletters and organizational communications.
  • Maintain website content, online store, and social media platforms.
  • Coordinate communication with volunteers, donors, and community partners.
  • Assist with media inquiries and public awareness efforts.

Fundraising & Donor Relations
  • Support fundraising campaigns and donor engagement activities.
  • Research grant opportunities and assist with grant applications.
  • Coordinate donor acknowledgements and stewardship activities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with donors and community partners.

Board & Administrative Support
  • Coordinate Board meeting schedules and logistics.
  • Prepare meeting agendas, packets, minutes, and follow-up documentation.
  • Track Board action items and organizational priorities.
  • Provide administrative support to the Executive Director as needed.

Financial & Resource Management
  • Assist with program budget monitoring and purchasing.
  • Maintain expense documentation and financial records.
  • Support responsible stewardship of organizational resources and supplies.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, public health, emergency management, business administration, communications, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods during events and deployments.
  • Ability to deploy to disaster locations as needed.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid passport if international travel is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in nonprofit, volunteer management, humanitarian services, public health, emergency management, or a related leadership role.
  • Excellent organizational, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • High attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and online collaboration tools.
