What is a disaster recovery contract?

Disaster Recovery Contracts are agreements between organizations and service providers that outline the terms and procedures for restoring IT systems, data, and business operations after an unexpected disruption, such as a natural disaster or cyberattack. These contracts specify responsibilities, response times, recovery processes, and service-level agreements to ensure business continuity. They are essential for minimizing downtime and data loss, and often include provisions for regular testing and updates to the recovery plan.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in disaster recovery contract roles?

Professionals in disaster recovery contract roles often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing priorities, tight deadlines, and the need to coordinate with multiple stakeholders under stressful conditions. The unpredictable nature of disasters means you may need to adapt quickly to new information or shifting recovery strategies. Additionally, working with diverse teams—from government agencies to private contractors—requires strong communication and project management skills. Staying organized and maintaining clear documentation are key to successfully navigating these challenges and ensuring compliance with contractual obligations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a disaster recovery contract professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Disaster Recovery Contract professional, you need expertise in risk assessment, business continuity planning, and a solid understanding of IT infrastructure, often supported by degrees in information technology or related fields. Familiarity with disaster recovery planning tools, cloud backup solutions, and certifications like Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP) or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) is highly valued. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you effectively coordinate recovery efforts and liaise with stakeholders. These abilities are crucial to ensure organizations can quickly restore operations and minimize losses after disruptive events.

Job description

Colonial Group, Inc. is a multigenerational, family-owned parent company overseeing a diverse portfolio of subsidiaries. Through our strategic infrastructure, logistics expertise, and a broad range of products and services, we create significant value for our customers while driving innovation and operational excellence.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Systems and Network Manager, with technical oversight from the Network Architect/Engineer and Systems Architect/Engineer, the Systems and Network Administrator maintains, secures, and supports Colonial Group's hybrid on-premises and cloud infrastructure. This role serves as the primary escalation point for network, systems, and endpoint issues, and the first point of contact for LAN/WAN, VPN, wireless, and Microsoft 365 (Entra ID, Intune, Teams, Teams Voice, SharePoint, and OneDrive) connectivity and access issues. The Administrator operates with a security-first mindset - applying Zero Trust principles, multi-factor authentication, and endpoint protection standards (FortiClient, Okta), and partners with the Cyber Security team on incident response and remediation. Core responsibilities include proactive monitoring and patching of network and systems infrastructure, PowerShell-driven automation of routine administrative tasks, disciplined ticket and change management using Halo ITSM, and maintaining accurate, audit-ready technical documentation. The Administrator is expected to stay current on emerging technologies, including AI-assisted administration tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, and to support ongoing modernization and continuous improvement across the network and systems environment.
Duties & Responsibilites
Network & Systems Infrastructure Management:
  • Implement, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Colonial Group's on-premises and cloud network and systems infrastructure, including backups, upgrades, and disaster recovery (DR) support, in accordance with documented change management procedures.

Security Patching & Vulnerability Management:
  • Patch, upgrade, and harden network and endpoint infrastructure on a defined cadence.

Identity, Access & Endpoint Management:
  • Administer Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, Intune, and Microsoft 365 (Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams Voice) to enforce least-privilege access, multi-factor authentication (MFA), Conditional Access, and Zero Trust security principles across users and devices.

Proactive Monitoring & Incident Response:
  • Use monitoring platforms (ManageEngine OpManager, iGlass, FortiAnalyzer, FortiManager) to proactively detect, triage, escalate, and resolve network, systems, and security issues.

Automation & Process Improvement:
  • Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts and automation workflows to streamline routine administration, auditing, and reporting tasks.

Ticket Hygiene & Change Management:
  • Maintain disciplined ticket management in Halo ITSM - including timely creation, escalation, and closure - and participate in change management processes for infrastructure updates.

Critical Documentation:
  • Develop and maintain clear, accurate, and audit-ready technical documentation for all active network electronics and related application environments, including design documents, build/runbook procedures, and support guidelines.

End-User & Subsidiary Support:
  • Provide responsive, professional support to end users and team members across all Colonial Group subsidiaries, serving as a positive representative of the IT department.

Escalation Management:
  • Escalate issues beyond the scope of this role to the appropriate network or systems engineer/architect, with clear context and documentation to support rapid resolution.

Vendor & Circuit Management:
  • Coordinate circuit procurement, maintenance, and support with third-party carriers and vendors, and assist with contract and service-level tracking.

Security Collaboration:
  • Partner with the Cyber Security team on issues with network or systems impact - including diagnosis, triage, containment, and remediation - and support broader initiatives such as endpoint detection and response and network anomaly monitoring.

Project & Initiative Leadership:
  • Act as project lead for small to medium initiatives, coordinating peers, vendors, and IT management, and contributing to the organization's ongoing IT modernization roadmap.

Proactive Maintenance & Business Continuity Support:
  • Participate in after-hours support during scheduled service windows or due to a production outage to support after-hours incidents and assist with periodic disaster recovery and business continuity testing.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, certifications, and hands-on experience.
  • 3-5 years of progressive experience in systems and/or network administration within an enterprise, multi-site environment.
  • Demonstrated experience administering hybrid on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience administering Microsoft 365 (Entra ID, Intune, Exchange Online, Teams) strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Solid working knowledge of Fortinet, CrowdStrike, or comparable enterprise network and security technologies.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 administration, including Entra ID, Intune, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
  • Understanding of Zero Trust security principles, multi-factor authentication, and endpoint detection and response.
  • Scripting and automation experience (PowerShell preferred) for routine administrative and auditing tasks.
  • CompTIA Network+ and Security+ certifications, or industry equivalent, held or actively pursued.
  • Fortinet and/or Microsoft certifications preferred but not required; certification progress expected within the first year of employment.
  • Familiarity with ITIL-aligned service management practices, including incident, problem, and change management.

Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to prioritize and resolve issues under pressure. Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with end users, team members, and vendors. Ability to work independently and collaboratively, and to mentor junior team members as needed. Willingness to participate in after-hours initiatives and stay current with evolving security and technology standards, including emerging AI-assisted administration tools.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer.
  • Ability to move around an office environment.
  • Occasionally lift or carry up to 20 pounds.

Travel: Occasional travel between Colonial Group locations may be required, up to approximately 20%
Eligibility Requirements: Hiring is contingent upon eligibility to work in the United States.
