As of Jul 24, 2026, the average yearly pay for disability underwriting in the United States is $103,082.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $77,000.00 and $121,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the highest paying underwriting job?

Senior or executive-level disability underwriting roles, such as Chief Underwriting Officer or Underwriting Director, tend to be the highest paying positions in the field. These roles require extensive experience, advanced knowledge of underwriting principles, and often involve leadership responsibilities, with salaries significantly higher than entry-level or mid-tier underwriting jobs.

What is the easiest PWD job to get?

In disability underwriting, entry-level roles such as administrative support or clerical positions are generally easier to obtain due to lower experience requirements. These jobs often require basic computer skills and understanding of insurance policies, making them accessible for individuals new to the field.

How to get into underwriting with no experience?

Disability underwriting roles often require some knowledge of insurance principles and risk assessment. To enter the field with no experience, candidates can pursue relevant certifications, such as the Associate in Underwriting (AU) or similar, and gain familiarity with underwriting software and medical terminology through online courses or entry-level positions in insurance companies. Building strong analytical skills and understanding policy details can also improve chances of starting a career in disability underwriting.

What does a disability underwriter do?

A disability underwriter evaluates insurance applications to determine the risk of insuring an individual against disability. They review medical records, assess policy terms, and use underwriting guidelines to decide on coverage eligibility and premium rates, often utilizing specialized software and adhering to industry regulations.
