Job description

The County Attorneyโ€™s Office at Washington County, located in West Bend, has an excellent opportunity for an Assistant County Attorney. The Office performs professional legal services concerning the preparation and trial of assigned cases, and provides legal advice and representation to County departments.

Salary and Benefits

Starting Salary: $92,775 - $123,362 based on experience.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited law school
  • Licensure to practice law in the State of Wisconsin
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience, preferably in municipal and/or civil law practice
  • Valid Wisconsin driverโ€™s license
Responsibilities
  • Represent the State in childโ€‘support enforcement actions brought by the Washington County Child Support Agency.
  • Prepare and try cases for mental commitments, guardianships, and protective placements, CHIPS, termination of parental rights, and paternity and childโ€‘support enforcement.
  • Provide guidance and legal advice to County departments.
  • Draft contracts, agreements, and other legal instruments as needed.
  • Provide opinions, give legal advice to, and assist the County Committees and County Departments as necessary.
  • Represent the County in workerโ€™s compensation and unemployment compensation claims, and other employmentโ€‘related matters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including responding to an emergency event.
Decision Making

Decisions are made independently concerning the preparation and trial of cases in areas of responsibility, and other daily activities, subject to office policies and the direction of the County Attorney.

Interactions

Significant interaction with attorneys, the Court system, County departments, law enforcement agencies, and the general public.

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of child support laws, mental and alcohol commitment laws, guardianship laws, juvenile law, termination of parental rights procedures, municipal law, administrative rules and regulations, and employment law. Ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously, prepare and try cases, communicate effectively orally and in writing, draft and review contracts, and interact effectively with County departments and the general public.
